I have purchased a wideband 30khz-1300mhz receiver with a view towards getting into amateur radio astronomy. I am looking at buying a couple of antennas particularly with respect to radio meteor observing on 41 mhz - the Snotel system frequency. I really don't know radio and could use some help. I understand that Tom Henchie is the resident expert, but he is not on the current SLAS roster. Can someone send me his contact information? Kurt, In high school about 1970 I began a radio astronomy project, but never completed it (sex, drugs and rock & roll took over my interests ;-). I had decided to construct either a Yolo antenna or a cylindrical paraboloid, two types of antennae that could be easily constructed in a home workshop. I especially liked the parabolic antenna ‘cause it looked more like a radio telescope. Anyway, I only got as far as building a Yolo antenna in the backyard until my Dad made me dismantle it when it became clear that I had lost interest. I never really knew much about radio either – I was getting a lot of help from my physics teacher, Space Monkey (nickname, of course – his real name was Mr. Budge and a fine teacher). So, I wouldn’t be much of a mentor. We had a high-school age SLAS member a few years ago who built a radio telescope and made a presentation at a regular SLAS meeting. I’d be happy to find how to contact him for you if you wish. I think that he was planning on going into physics. He might be willing to help if he’s still around. Contact me off-list if you want. Oops - had a brain cramp there. The antenna type I built was a Yagi (not Yolo). Don't know where that came from.
