Looks like for a few extra bucks, you can get a Galileo impersonator. I wonder if that's the original, thin Galileo or the later years portly Galileo? On Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 9:22 AM, Nancy Matro <nancy.matro@gmail.com> wrote:

I grew up in Moab. I don’t know the guy. One of the more recent (20 to 30 years ago or less) imports. My friends just say, “Hey, bring your scope to the next party.” No need to pay and if you pour me a drink while I’m setting up I can almost be tolerable company. My Italian (or Latin) is sketchy at best, so the Galileo impersonations are kept to a minimum. Believe me, he’s much harder to play than Elvis. It is not an Astronomy Club, it is an individual who hires out. He is kind of expensive, wonder if Arches is paying him.

It appears that he is working on his own and not for the government. Arches, like our other National Parks, is suffering from the automatic spending cuts - the sequester. Arches must be happy to have him as it draws people into the Park. They have been trying to get people back to camping in the Park to bring in revenue. Arches has been in competition with Moab's night life for the past couple of decades. Next will come the IMAX like at Zions. -A On Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 10:10 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

A SLAS blast has asked for volunteers for a Arches Star Party in which he is listed as the "group" providing scopes. It is reasonable to ask if he is being payed, if SLAS is going to volunteer. Not sure it can be assumed sequester means he will be not be paid.
IMAX? what is the point of going to a National Park. It appears that he is working on his own and not for the government.

I think he is being paid by the tourists, Erik, but not the Park. If the Park had funds, they would have the rangers do the program such as is being done with Bryce. -A On Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 11:16 AM, <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> wrote:

Pretty sure you cannot assume that for the advertised Arches event. If he is going to collect from the tourists then SLAS should not participate. Sequester was generally in the form delayed openings. Have you talked to them personally Ann? Red Rock Astronomers seem misrepresented as an astronomy club. I think he is being paid by the tourists, Erik, but not the Park. If the

I would point out that SLAS has on occassion accepted "donations" for holding star parties for various groups, so without resorting to semantic gymnastics, perhaps we live in a glass house...? On Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 12:26 PM, <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> wrote:

don't see the analogy here. If he has gotten the park service to pay him, then more power to him, let him do it without SLAS. SLAS has accepted donations for the group, not individual profit. You may be right, Erik, on the other hand, are you certain he doesn't have a permit also? Or of his tax status? On the surface, I admit that it sounds a bit opportunistic (for want of a better word), but I can't draw a firm conclusion until I know more about his situation. If SLAS did show up and offered for free what he's charging for, he might pack-up and find a different street corner, so to speak. On Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 1:10 PM, <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> wrote:

Sorry to jump in so late in the conversation. I'm doing the May 10th Star Party at Arches and I will be joined by a couple of park rangers who have initiated a night skies program within Arches & Canyonlands. They'll have a couple of telescopes of their own. To my knowledge if the "Red Rock Astronomy" group (or person) shows up they'll be volunteering just like the rest of us. The Star Party is being promoted by the local "Friends of Arches & Canyonlands" volunteer group and they're advertising it in Moab area media. It's also being promoted by the Moab Information Center. We don't really know how many people to expect, so I'm just putting the word out to Salt Lake area amateur astronomers in case any of you are interested in participating. We'll begin around sundown (~8:30) on the 10th at the Panorama Point viewing area, located about 12 miles into the park. Panorama Point is not a campsite, and the nearest restrooms are about a mile down the road. I have no say in the availability of camping spots. Thanks, Seth Jarvis Clark Planetarium On Apr 29, 2013, at 1:18 PM, "Chuck Hards" <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

I am sure he is legal. Just saying volunteers for Arches should be aware if he is being paid. iE: wether or not they are working for him. I doubt he is prepared for the likely crowd. He is advertised as the group providing scopes. I seriously doubt he will have his hat out asking for money. My bet is Arches is paying for his service. Arches says their cutbacks mean not hiring full time staff, in their case a vacant ranger position.
