Just a heads up that the next ATM session at the Hutchings' optical shop will be July 9th from 9:00 to noon. If you have any questions about what ATMing is, or would like to discuss telescope making in general, please e-mail me off list at mat<dot>hutchings<at>siemens<dot>com Even if you do not have a current project, or have never built a telescope, please feel to free to stop by. You can learn more about amateur telescope making and discuss this fascinating past time with like minded people. If you would like to attend, please e-mail me and I'll give you directions to my house at that time. Mat
I was interested in the comment about anti-dew devices. Is the group going to make their own? I'd be interested in attending one of those sessions. Okay folks, here is the reminder for the July ATM session at the Hutchings' optical shop in Riverton. We will be meeting this Saturday, July 9th from 9:00 to noon. If you have any questions about what ATMing is, or would like to discuss telescope making in general, please e-mail me off list at mat<dot>hutchings<at>siemens<dot>com Also e-mail me for directions to my house. From previous posts regarding this subject, it appears there will be people making dew zappers. I have soldering irons and plenty of solder, but you should bring all other supplies (resistors, wire, etc.) you may need. The following link that Jay previously sent is a very good resource: http://www.dewbuster.com/heaters/heaters.html This site should tell you what value resistors you will need to obtain. You should be able to get the resistors from Radio Shack, or any other electronics parts house. There will be some glass pushing going on. I have an 8 inch project that I will likely be working on. I happily let others work my mirrors so they can get a feel for what is involved. Please come and have a great time! Mat P.S. The Bryce Canyon star party was awesome, and so I'm sure there will be much discussion about it during the ATM session! -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Joe Bauman Sent: Monday, June 20, 2011 2:18 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] July ATM session Please remind me about the meeting! It would be great to have you at the next session Joe! Whatever project anyone wants to work on, whenever they want, is the plan. I think it safe to say that there is enough interest that there will be work on dew zappers in July. Sounds like Jay has done some leg work in getting information together about the zappers. Another good strength in numbers project is to help each other out when a large mirror needs polishing. If any of you have ever polished a > 12" mirror by hand, then you know it would be good to get help! When it feels like your arms are going to fall off after polishing for a while, then someone else steps in and pushes the pitch lap. If 5 or 6 people help, these polishing parties can result in a mirror being polished out much more quickly. Plus, you can feel a little bit like Tom Sawyer while you stand back and watch others do some work for you. Of course, payback comes around when someone else has a mirror to polish!
