Hello all. I'm new here and this is my first message. I am going to be getting a new (at least new to me) telescope soon. I'm looking for an 8" dob that takes 2" eyepieces. What I'm wondering is...where is a good place to buy either used or new telescopes at a decent price? Thanks for the help. -- ++++++++++++++++++ Troy Davidson

Seems your choices are the Clark Planetarium, Ritz Camera, or mail order. A SLAS member works at the State St. Ritz. Erik Hello all. I'm new here and this is my first message.

Hi Troy, Before spending any money what's say you take advantage of your SLAS membership and start off by borrowing a scope or two from the club? Find a list of the scopes available here: http://slas.us/membership_benefits.asp If you're going to buy local you might want to talk to long time SLAS member Bill Cowles at the Inkley's on South State St in SLC. patrick On 04 Mar 2009, at 14:57, Troy Davidson wrote:

Patrick, I am going to try out some of the club scopes before I buy. I just want to start looking around and pricing. And I will talk to Bill. Thanks for the help. On Wed, Mar 4, 2009 at 5:38 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

I thought Inkley's was bought out by Ritz a few years ago.

Troy, If you haven't checked out Orion Telescopes & Binoculars (www.telescope.com) they would be a great place to start. An 8" SkyQuest lists for $329 (with $45 standard shipping) and includes the upgraded 2" Crayford focuser: http://www.telescope.com/ control/product/~category_id=dobsonians/~pcategory=telescopes/ ~product_id=08943 Astromart is also a good source for used equipment: http:// www.astromart.com/classifieds/ Regards, Dave Bennett On Mar 4, 2009, at 2:57 PM, Troy Davidson wrote:

I recently bought this telescope: http://www.telescopes.com/telescopes/dobsonian-telescopes/zhumellz8deluxedob... an 8" Zhumell Dob. I've been very pleased with the purchase so far. Has the 2" Crayford focuser (with an adapter for the 1.25 inch eyepieces as well). I initially had my heart set on the SkyQuest XT8, but found the Zhumell package much more complete, and with free shipping, you really do get quite a lot for the $379 they're asking. Package includes 2 eyepieces, laser collimator (that probably needs to be collimated itself, mine did), battery-powered mirror fan, RACI 10x50 finder, moon filter for the 1.25 eyepiece (wish there was one for the 2"), and a free green laser pointer. The altitude tension mechanism is really quite nice. It's easy to set whatever tension you prefer for both alt and az. I've read that some have found the mirror on these scopes attached a bit too tightly with the rubber mirror clamps thus causing some astigmatism. That's easily corrected though, The scope is a bit bulky, but not too bad to move around, even when assembled. I'm in Orem if you'd like to come by some time to take a look in person. I know there are some Scuba sorts on this group, and, as a break from Global Warming, would any of you care to wax eloquent (recommend) a good place in Utah to get certified? (Resist the impulse to make it personal :)). We have a wedding in Mexico this Spring, and I want to go on something more than a resort dive. Thanks! Jo

Hi Jo, Your post is not really off topic. You're just preparing for once global warming takes hold and we're all forced to swim... :) But seriously, Neptune Divers is a great place to get started. It was they who hosted a season of star parties at their Bonneville Seabase location near Grantsville (and where they've generously loaned the land for the U's newest observatory) and it was they who put together a scuba/eclipse trip to the Caribbean in 1998 (so, in other words, they are fellow astro-geeks). Typically one starts training in the swimming pool at their Neptune facility in SLC and once done with that conducts the open water training at Seabase. Oh and if global cooling is your thing they also conduct ice dives near the poles... Seabase, BTW, is a natural warm spring that's open all year and which (to the consternation of the experts) supports a thriving assortment of ocean fishes. And for those of us who like our creature comforts, Seabase has hot water showers, restrooms, snack bar, a classroom and paved roads right up to their driveway (things lacking at most other open water sites in Utah). To follow up contact Linda Nelson at 435.884.3874. Neptune: http://www.neptunedivers.net Seabase: http://www.seabase.net/ Starbase: http://www.physics.utah.edu/starbase/ Clear skies! patrick
Jo, I certified at the U. That was eons ago. Long before there was global warming. Non-students can take classes through Continuing Ed. They still do a fabulous job, but you will have to check on when the next class begins and see if you can fit it in on time for your trip. Will you be going to the Caribbean? Scubaing along the barrier reef there is incredible! -A
I dont believe Bill is at Inkley's any more. I was in there last week, and the area where his display cases and and telescopes was cleared out. just 2 scopes on the floor. I dont know if it had anything to do with Inkley's filing a chapter 11 or not. but it looks like SLC has one less place to obtain telescopes and EP's locally. Mike: I was at Inkley's last week and they said that Bill's hours had been cut back to 3 hours on just three day's a week. Most of the rest of the staff is in the same boat. Ritz camera has filed chapter 11 bankruptcy and I just made the connection between Ritz and Inkley's. DT --- On Wed, 3/4/09, Mike Nelson <mikenelson63@gmail.com> wrote:
