A fellow at work told me that he was at a vast fossilized coral bed near Lakeside yesterday. Brought back some nice specimens. Anybody else familiar with this site? It's not far from the observing site. Chuck __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com
Chuck, Lakeside is north of the observing site abbout 30 minutes. I am not sure where the fossil beds are, but there is alot of excavating at Lakeside for fill for the railroad causeway. Its probably there. To get there, follow the paved road north. You will reach a turn to the ringht accompanied by a sign stating that you should not continue onto Eagle Range Bombing Area. There is a dirt road (Very Good Condition) to the right of this sign. There is sometimes a sign saying that Lakeside is down that road, but is very small. Follow this road until you reach the lake. Lakeside isn't much of a town. I think there are only some concrete pads for trailers and very little more now. The excavation is southwest of here, but easily walked to from the town site. Maybe your friend can fill in some details here. Brent --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:

I've heard of a site north of Delle (one exit east of the Lakeside/Eagle Range exit). Go north from the exit and you'll see a shallow wash/canyon on the south side of the Lakeside Mountains. Follow the road up the canyon. The site is on the west side I believe. Sorry I can't be more specific. Bill B. Chuck Hards wrote:

My co-worker told me that the railroad ran right next to, or through the area. He mentioned also a large quarry (Brent, is this the same one you mentioned?) that had fossils about. Thanks Chuck --- bill biesele <xmix@biesele.net> wrote:

Lakeside is an old railroad town and sits right next to the rail that goes across the causeway in the Great Salt Lake. The quarry for the fill is next to the town, just west and a bit south. The distance between them is less than 1/2 mile. There are also rail lines going into the quarry, since they still occasionally get fill there for maintaining the causeway. This sounds like what your co-worker is talking about. Brent --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:

Found a reference in _A Collector's Guide to Rock, Mineral, & Fossil Loacalities of Utah_, J.R. Wilson, Utah Geological Survery Miscellaneous Publication 95-4, pg 120 describing horn coral in the Lakeside Mountains north of Delle. "Description: Limestones at the south end of the Lakeside Mountains contain horn coral up to 4 inches or more... Directions: Take the Delle exit west of Grantsville and follow the frontage road west approximately 3 miles where it turns NE. Continue straight after crossing the railroad tracks and proceed into the mountain area. Park and hike up the slopes to look for the horn corals." Which in no way means there isn't horn coral where you've described. Brent Watson wrote:

Wow, Bill, you really did the research! Thanks! The site is a tad too far from the observing site for me to combine the activities on the day, but it definitely is added to the summer itinerary! Chuck --- bill biesele <xmix@biesele.net> wrote:
