Hi all. I finally got another opportunity to image last night and decided to collect luminance data all night on M51, the Whirlpool galaxy. I managed to get 80 frames of 300 seconds each, for a total of 400 minutes. The seeing was pretty good for Utah, and I managed to get some really nice detail for such a small instrument (AP130 EDF at F/6). Take a look at this link. http://www.allred-astro.com/gpage8.html Be sure to click the images a few times to get the full version. Cheers, Tyler

Awesome Image Tyler :) I hope now my mount is tweaked out I can get longer exposures M51 to get some more of that good faint stuff out :) David On 5/5/10 5:47 PM, Tyler Allred wrote:

Thanks David. The longer exposure time really helps for bringing out the faint stuff. I hope your mount performs well. Thanks Kurt and Joe. It sure was nice to get in a really good night of imaging. Cheers, Tyler
Great detail Tyler. And I really liked the edge-on down in the corner. patrick On 05 May 2010, at 18:47, Tyler Allred wrote:

It's such a grand image. And there's another edge-on just to the upper left of the stream of stars and gas and gunk resulting from the near-collision. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wed, May 5, 2010 10:33:15 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Woops I forgot to add a subject line - M51 Luminance Image from last night Great detail Tyler. Patrick, I like the little edge-on galaxy just above and left of the companion. The image is actually full of very tiny galaxies if you look carefully. I especially see them when I stretch the data really hard, which I like doing just to see what is there. I had a good time comparing my shot to the Hubble image of M51. Of course, there is no real comparison, but it is still fun to look at details in mine and then see what it really looks like in the Hubble version. Somewhere along the line I picked up this picture of M51 along with dozens of it's neighbors, their names and magnitude. It may help identify some of the players in this busy field.
