Had a wonderful two days in Vernon and have had a request for tomorrow night so if I get someone who is interested and can commit I'll go out early, say by 2:00pm to reserve the spot. I do need a reply or email if you can go by Friday at 9:00a.m. so I can load up. On another note, Patrick, I sketched NGC 3888 about 2 weeks ago with no star so I think you have a SN. Any more word on that! Be great if it is number 2 for you! -- Thanks! Jay
Jay, I plan to go if the Clear Sky Chart looks OK tomorrow -- I would love to get a photo of Patrick's second SN. But the last I looked it didn't look so good. *Possible* second SN. :) Just so you know it is proving to be a difficult target what with it being not that bright and so close to the core of the galaxy. Here is my image from tonight: http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=6248 And here is one from the Virtual Telescope: http://www.virtualtelescope.eu/2015/06/19/supernova-psn-j114735085558147-ngc...
Hi Jay and Patrick -- the Clear Sky Chart says seeing will be as awful as it could be tonight. That's based on Lakeside, which is the nearest site they cover to Vernon, as far as I know. It's just not worth it to load all that gear and not be able to get a decent picture. So I have to pass on tonight, unfortunately. Thanks, Joe Sent from my iPhone

Other have imaged it but I'm told that it does not become official until one of the pros gets a spectrum. patrick
I can now banish the word "possible" from my lexicon, at least in this case. Some folks did follow-up work last night using the 2.3 meter Bok telescope at Kitt Peak and confirmed it to be a type Ib near maximum light. Details here: http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=7680 And it "only" took 252 nights of searching since my first SN to find this one, which is half the 508 nights it took to find #1. Hmmm, somehow that reminds me of this Albert Einstein quote: "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." patrick On 20 Jun 2015, at 11:38, Joan Carman <jcarman6@q.com> wrote:

Thank you all for all the congratulations. Very much appreciated. And I have to admit that being mentioned in the same paragraph as Kitt Peak is quite an ego boost (as if mine isn't big enough already). But then it just goes to show that even with modest equipment and a LOT of perseverance even amateurs can still make real contributions to science. patrick

Sorry to hear about the problems, but sort of glad. Murphy targeted you this time. Last week-end he had me in his sights. The battery pack for my telrad fell out (again) and the wires were damaged. I managed to jury-rig it to work, sort of. Then went to attach my inverter to the portable power supply and discovered the connector was "gone!" Looked everywhere on the ground and then in the trunk, it was just gone. So an excellent night at the gravel pit with no spotter or power. :( There was something wrong with the sky last night. It was clear, but the stars were dim, muffled. On another note, Patrick, I sketched NGC 3888 about 2 weeks ago with no star so I think you have a SN. Any more word on that! Be great if it is number 2 for you!
Thanks, So far it's still just a possible supernova. Hopefully confirmation will come soon. patrick
