I had the same concern given the policies posted at Celestron's website, but a problem with the top-plate of my CG-4 mount was solved by my sending pictures of the flawed part; they sent a replacement. So, keep working with them; you may end up having to buy a new hand controller from them, but my guess is you can avoid the expense of sending the mount. Another thing to check is the battery in the hand controller itself (it may well have one of those quarter-sized flat batteries that desktop computers typically have on their motherboards); I had that problem with my hand controller for a different mount I have (not a Celestron).
