I took several shots of 168P this evening in hopes of catching the fragments that have been seen coming off the main body recently. No luck there but since I had the images I put them together into a brief animation: Comet 168P/Hergenrother http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=68&g2_page=8 Clear skies, patrick
Nice. What is the magnitude at this time. WolframAlpha puts the apparent magnitude as +14.26. I tried to see 168P Sunday night, but wasn’t sure I observed it or not. One of those “Oh, avert your gaze that might be it” sort of situations. To put it mildly, it was very faint. It’s nice to see a tail on the thing. Patrick, Nice shot! What is the moving object in the lower left quadrant of the image? Thanks Rodger C. After the first two shots I was thinking (hoping, actually) it had something to do with the pieces that have been flaking off. But their pattern of movement through the other 5 has me guessing it's some sort of reflection. patrick On 07 Nov 2012, at 06:33, Rodger C. Fry wrote:

Here is another way to get to it. http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=5464 Does that work any better? patrick
No, it's weird -- the single frame just sits there thumbing its nose at me. ________________________________ From: Wiggins Patrick <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 7, 2012 8:20 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Comet 168P/Hergenrother animation On 07 Nov 2012, at 20:16, Joe Bauman wrote:

Anyone else having the same problem? Any ideas why Joe is having trouble making the animation run? patrick Sent from my iPad On Nov 7, 2012, at 20:30, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

Patrick,
From its relative motion, I think it is unrelated to the comet and is an independent object. I can't see it being a reflection. If it were me, I would take another image headed in the direction it was traveling and see if you can get it again. If you were lucky, it might be an un-charted comet.

Hi Rodger, I really don't see it being real. If it was real it would be moving in the same direction in every image. But the mystery object's movements are all over the place. I suppose we can't rule out it being under some sort of alien control. But if that was the case I'd have to move this conversation over to the UFO thread that's been on UA today. :) patrick (who still wants to have a real UFO experience...) Alas, no such luck. I shot another series tonight and the "UFO" (unidentified fuzzy object) was not there. patrick
The SLAS website seems to be down this morning.
