Well, right now there is no traffic at all between here and Idaho according to Google. I was going to leave about 2 am but now I'm wondering. I guess it's anybody's guess but when do you think traffic will pick up? I didn't make camping reservations, but maybe I can just hang out in a parking lot somewhere. I can't get into my observing location until 6 am. If we were in Europe we would probably all be taking buses and trains and there wouldn't be a traffic nightmare.
We are leaving between midnight and 1 AM, headed for the Thornton, ID area. Will arrive before dawn. If we can't find a good spot near Thornton (very close to centerline), we could end up anywhere between Rigby and Rexburg. Mike Clements is already camped-out in an alfalfa field near Rigby. We are leaving immediately after totality, in an attempt to beat the southbound traffic home. Wife has to work early Tuesday morning. I would expect a fair amount of northbound traffic starting around sunup. Glad it's on a weekday, would have been much worse on a weekend. Another thing to note: I have had reports that some towns are already out of fuel. We are taking a sub-compact car and five extra gallons of gas, which gives us sufficient fuel for the full round-trip, plus a 90 mile reserve. We don't plan on needing fuel while in Idaho. I hope he's not allergic to alfalfa. I wondered about gas. My truck has a pretty big tank but I'm planning on bringing a little extra. On Sun, Aug 20, 2017 at 1:36 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

LOL, he just texted me a picture of him drinking Coronas (for the corona, groan) so he's apparently having a good time! I'm getting nervous. That countdown clock on Cloudy Nights isn't helping. Weather reports are looking much better than they were just two days ago, but there are reports of smoke from wildfires probably obscuring the view somewhat on the path of totality. I'm in Casper (It was a great AstroCon, thanks SLAS!) and thus far the traffic has been somewhat lighter than expected by the locals. Are the reports of fuel outages verified or is the media reporting worst case scenarios? There are a number of people that I know who have decided not to go because someone told somebody else that there would be no gas, etc. Unless they are actually verified reports, I think the media is doing a disservice. I hope everyone wavering turns off the media and just goes! Just keeping checking 511 or traffic websites. Clear skies, Dale.
