I noticed this was posted in the UVAA classifieds recently, and it's a tempting deal for anyone looking for a good scope. I don't know the owner, just thought I'd pass this along to the list(s): ------------------------------------ Coulter Odyssey 13.1" f/4.5 Dobsonian -- in great condition (purchased 1990). With f/8.0 tube stop down cover for Planetary viewing. The scope weighs about 100 lbs. If you search on the net, you will find lots of info about the Coulter scopes -- great for deep sky viewing. Comes with eyepieces: a stock 27mm, a 6mm Ortho 1 1/4, and Celestron 30mm Kellner, and Lumicon UNC Nebula Filter. I will sell the setup for $500.00 (a real bargain). My name is Lance Owens MD, telephone in SLC is 801-581-0196. Pickup in SLC. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hi Rich: Rushed for time right now, will send more thoughtful reply in a day or two. Congrats on the trailer! If you want to go in 50/50 on the Odyssey, I have $250 toward it. We can build a new scope around it to use or re-sell at a profit. Check the SLAS roster for this guy's name. Let me know asap, stay cool! C. --- Richard Tenney <retenney@yahoo.com> wrote:

Sorry list, this was meant for Rich alone, but I didn't notice that he sent it to everyone before I replied. It could be a heck of a deal. Although some folks have complained about Coulter optics, every one of the roughly dozen I have tested have been essentially diffraction-limited. Excellent optics, excellent value. --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:

Turns out the guy was probably measuring the O.D. of the tube, not the mirror as it's really a 10" Coulter, not a 13.1", according to Chuck who went and had a look at it today. It's available if anyone wants it, and you might be able to talk him down from $500. These are great star party scopes, solid as a rock and you won't shed any tears if some kid leaves his fingerprints on the (sono)tube... ;o) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? He swore it was a 13", until we held a tape measure across the tube. He then spent some time looking through his records for his sales receipt- which he didn't find while I was there. There is a reinforcing ring on the mirror's center for collimation purposes. That said, it was in pretty good shape. The base had a few nicks, the tube was in excellent condition. It had that infuriating stock "focuser", but the images of the hillside and details on power lines several blocks away were satisfyingly crisp. Having rebuilt a pair of Odyssey Compacts a few years ago for a local elementary school, I am familiar with them inside-out, and can say that Rich is right. These are the perfect star-party scopes. "Loaner", "Beater", whatever. --- Richard Tenney <retenney@yahoo.com> wrote:

I called the guy and am going over to inspect the scope. He said I'm the first one to call and I have first option on it. Turns out he's in the neighborhood I grew up in! He's not a native of Utah and confirmed that he's not in a local club.
