I enjoyed Kurt's report on observing Comet Lulin. I also tried to find it with my son-in-law, early Saturday morning (Jan. 31) in McKinney, TX. We had a clear sky, but were unable to find the comet, either with binoculars or with his telescope (a 4" Meade reflector on an equatorial mount). I'll try again in a couple of weeks when it's in the evening sky and I can get up to the cabin above Oakley. Raeburn G. Hello All, I stepped out this morning (in my bathrobe) and snapped a couple of frames of Comet Lulin with my Nikon D700. I was using a 70-200mm VR Nikkor lens at 200mm. The comet was clearly visible in the 6-second exposures. I posted the image to my gallery album. The image is pretty bad, but the comet is clearly visible. Here is a link to the full version. http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=935&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 The blue and yellow stars to the upper right of the comet are SAO 159030 and 159028 respectively, if that helps anyone with the position of the comet. I am looking forward to imaging this comet with better equipment as it gets closer. Cheers, Tyler _____________________________________________ -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Raeburn Kennard Sent: Sunday, February 01, 2009 11:45 PM To: 'utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com' Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Search for Comit Lulin I enjoyed Kurt's report on observing Comet Lulin. I hope none of your neighbors saw you outdoors in a bathrobe, with a DSLR & telephoto lens... ;o) On Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 9:13 AM, Tyler Allred <tylerallred@earthlink.net>wrote:

So Tyler did you piggy back, Prim-focus or just take it off-hand? jg --- On Mon, 2/2/09, Tyler Allred <tylerallred@earthlink.net> wrote: From: Tyler Allred <tylerallred@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Search for Comit Lulin To: "'Utah Astronomy'" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Date: Monday, February 2, 2009, 9:13 AM Hello All, I stepped out this morning (in my bathrobe) and snapped a couple of frames of Comet Lulin with my Nikon D700. Jim, I actually shot 6 seconds from a stationary tripod, which shows some star trailing. But, I removed the trails in Photoshop with a duplicate layer, set to "darken", that I bumped a few pixels to the side to remove the trails. It's an easy technique and it works OK for short exposures when there isn't time to set up a mount. Oh, you said
I was using a 70-200mm VR Nikkor lens at 200mm.
So you piggy-backed it. I think I had better try that.
