Some Interesting Planetary Nebulae in Scorpius
Hi all, I saw some interesting planetaries in Scorpius and Lupus Tuesday night. NGC 6026 was a mag 12.9 and size 54" at Dec -34 degrees. NGC 6072 showed up better at a mag 11.7 and about size 68" at Dec -36 degrees. This really looked good in the 12mm Nagler. It was a little dimmer than NGC 6302 (Bug Nebula). The Bug Nebula is about size 85"x44" and mag 9.7. The last planetary nebula in Scorpius was NGC 6337 with a mag 12.0 and size 51". This one is more circular shaped. Also got good views in Jim's 25" of planetaries in Cygnus. With the blinking planetary (NGC 6826), there is no blink effect in a 25 inch scope. NGC 7008 and NGC 7026 (Cheeseburger Nebula) looked awesome. We had good seeing at 8000 feet outside of Zion National Park. Viewed many globulars in the Milky Way, Hercules, and Ophucuius. Also many galaxies in the Canes Venaciti and Coma Berenices area of the sky. Also a few galaxies in Draco looked great. I think I viewed over a hundred objects Tuesday night so I decided to sleep Wednesday night. Hopefully next month it will get dark earlier in August. Debbie
Thanks for the great report, Debbie. I concentrated on photography the other night in the San Rafael, and got an OK view of the easiest planetary of all, M27. I'll be writing a blog about it. Debbie, Wonderful report! I saw the Cat's Eye Nebula last night and from around 80x to 320x the central star was always evident (blinked for awhile at 320x but it was probably the user with me or conditions improved while viewing it). Some areas of structure were evident at higher power with an impression of spiral structure. The nebulosity at 320x at times seem to be away from the central star as if the star had blown it away, kinda of like M42. Also saw Jupiter and as Daniel pointed out the GRS looked like a big target on the planet without the northern equatorial band in place. I commented it must be getting ready to be a practice target for the Death Star for those Star Wars fans. Looked at the Veil Nebula (Witches Broom) in a wide field 2 inch lens and that was terrific. Then a bunch of Herschel 400 galaxies that really weren't much. Glad you had a great night. I'm loading and heading to Wolf Creek tonight to observe most of the night and then sleep over, coming home in the a.m. Probably my last session at a dark site til August with the moon getting larger and some public star parties coming up on Saturday. I know most people work but if anyone wants to join me at Wolf Creek tonight feel free to come on up. On Thu, Jul 15, 2010 at 2:16 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

David, Nice image! I really like these wider shots that show how all the pieces fit together.
Sorry to be slow but I just got back from Wyoming, with no email and no cell phones. Excellent! Cheers, Tyler

So, here is my first run with the DSLR peltier cooler at summer night temperatures. It was about 75 down here last night and I had the camera a little above freezing at around 36 degrees.
This image is 17 lights at 7min and 8sec each. 1 dark frame.

Enjoy!

Great report, Debbie, thanks. Of course, you DO have a better view of that part of the sky than the rest of us! Stay out of the sun, it's going to be brutal this weekend.
I second what Chuck says, also about the sun. My old hiking companion, Conrad Bert, developed a melanoma on the scalp from all his sun exposure -- he would not wear a hat and almost never put on any sun screen. Sometimes he wrapped a bandanna around his head, covering his hair, but that was a thin piece of cloth. The melanoma metastasized to his liver. The liver cancer would have killed him, except that Parkinson's got him first. He was a dear friend and I try to warn everyone I can about the dangers of overexposure to sun. As astronomers, at least we're mostly out at night. But some of us camp out or stay out all night and pack in the morning, and I want all to remember to protect against Sol.
