Hi all, SLAS's webmeister Ken Warner has been working hard to get the SLAS website updated for the new year. I think it's all set but I'd appreciate it if some of the non-SLAS members on the list could look it over and see if anything needs fixing. Comments from SLAS members are welcome too but I'm especially interested in hearing from those with "fresh eyes" who may not have visited the site before. http://slas.us/ And for your viewing enjoyment from last evening's flight: :) Anyone heard about these things floating about over the West Desert? http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/BLIMPS.JPG And speaking of the West Desert, a while back folks here were able to tell me the dots I see on the ground around here are ant hills. Any ideas what these features are? I spotted them north of I-80 and just east of where the salt ends (dirt road in the image for scale). http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/PATTERNS.JPG Great night tonight. I hope I'm not the only one taking advantage. Hmmm, I wonder if Ms. French is. <g> patrick
Yes, I've seen and photographed them from the ground. As a matter of fact, once I thought I might be viewing a UFO, until I looked at it through my finder scope! They are sometimes visible from our Lakeside site. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: utah astronomy listserve utah astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, January 2, 2012 12:51 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Have a look / OT pix Hi all, SLAS's webmeister Ken Warner has been working hard to get the SLAS website updated for the new year. They are part of a sensor suite Raytheon and the military are testing out. http://www.deseretnews.com/m/article/700024520 I first saw them when flying commercially to Sacramento. Thanks for the info Dan. Maybe once the feds are done with them the highway patrol can use them to catch speeders heading for Wendover. :) patrick On 02 Jan 2012, at 05:09, Daniel Holmes wrote:

Here's some more info: http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/jlens-coordinating-cruise-missile-defens... http://www.globalsecurity.org/space/systems/jlens.htm http://www.raytheon.com/newsroom/technology/pas09/newsroom/news16/ Kinda cool stuff, from a certain point of view. It does look like one of the goals for 2012 is to do surveillance of SLC and the surrounding area though… Dan On Jan 2, 2012, at 11:25 AM, Joe Bauman wrote:

Yes. Depending on which sign you read it's called the Warnock Engineering Building or the Engineering/Mines Classroom Building. Here's a map: http://slas.us/location.asp patrick

I remember this being in the local news a few years ago, and sure enough, here's what I found in the desnews: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700024520/Missile-detection-airship-makes...
