My understanding is that the firm claimed to have gotten their name from the first names of the original two partners in the chain, SAM and BOb. As many of you might remember, there was a big flap, several years ago, from complaints that the Sambo name was racist. IIRC, the restaurants even had Little Black Sambo imagery displayed around the walls. The successor to the chain is BAKER'S SQUARE. Thanx, Ray
Trust me, it may have started from Sam and BOb but once they started offering "tiger whipped butter" with their pancakes along with the imagery there was no denying.

The Salt Lake franchises certainly did use graphics from the children's book.

Nah, my first job was at "Big John's little Beeline" 3900 South just below 900 East. We regularly sold regular for $ 24.9 and when the gas wars happened (remember them) we dropped as low as $ 19.9 and you still got full service. Recaps in any size were $9.95 each mounted but if you purchased all four they were $39.95 mounted and balanced. I made $1.00 for each tire I mounted. I thought I was rich. Actually I was better off financially than most of my friends. Of course I still had to work all summer for a good telescope. ;)

I started working at the Beeline in 1964. I did not have a license at that time so I had to skateboard to work and my folks would pick me up in the evening. As I remember I had my first Tasco long before working at "Big Johns". I paid for my first telescope by selling Spudnuts! That would have been around 1960. If I remember correctly I made .05 per half dozen. Wow! I must have sold a bunch of Spudnuts. I can still remember that I could see the craters on the moon with the big eyepiece and NEVER EVER focused on anything with the "high power" eyepiece. Some things haven't changed eh?

I used to love Spudnuts (back before I had diabetes). Kids would come to the Deseret News and roam around the departments selling them. Eric, I remember flying to a meeting in CA with 2 dozen Spudnuts for the inside sales people. They had not heard of them, so I took them as a treat. I can remember the young people carrying wire baskets with straps over their shoulders (not unlike the venders at a baseball game) and going door to door selling paper bags of the critters.

Nah, my first job was at "Big John's little Beeline" 3900 South just below 900 East. We regularly sold regular for $ 24.9 and when the gas wars happened (remember them) we dropped as low as $ 19.9 and you still got full service. Recaps in any size were $9.95 each mounted but if you purchased all four they were $39.95 mounted and balanced. I made $1.00 for each tire I mounted. I thought I was rich. Actually I was better off financially than most of my friends. Of course I still had to work all summer for a good telescope. ;)

Of course I've never done anything like that. I was always the kid sticking up for the oppressed. But I can't pass up a chance to vicariously kick some people in the donuts, especially when they so obviously need it. ;-)

I don't know why for sure but instead of thinking of me, I thought of Guy Malmbourg selling Spudnuts as a small boy and you "trying" to take his money or his Spudnuts.
Thinking about it, he would have been with me, taking your Spudnuts and money.

IHOP, Denny's, Village Inn etc are all clones.
Thanx, Ray
