Just got home here at 4:27 a.m. from Big Cottonwood Canyon. Seems the shower was on-and-off at times. Some were impressive - from long trails to bright orbs - even my kids were having fun! (which I didn't expect). The number of faint meteors might of edged out the bright ones. Not taking a count, I felt this was one of the better Perseid showers I've seen in regards to brightness. There was a number of good non-member meteors that showed up from our locations. Hope that some will show up in the photos I attempted. Anyone want to send me a comment on the Perseids? I may do a story, depending on the success of my photos. All those in the Uintas, please give me a note. (I was as cold as I've ever been in August, I think.) Probabloy this would be for Thursday's paper, but there's a slight possibilty it's for today. Also, Patrick, if you're there, can you tell me how long people might be able to see some activity? It isn't completely over, is it? -- Thanks, Joe B.

Not one of my better Perseids from the standpoint of numbers but there were some impressively long and bright ones. Oddly, none that I saw, not even the bright ones, left much of a train. It was also kind of weird that there seemed to be as many sporadics as Perseids. All in all it was a good practice session for this year's Leonids.
Also, Patrick, if you're there, can you tell me how long people might be able to see some activity? It isn't completely over, is it? -- The Perseids typically last a couple of weeks with some members being seen a week or more before the peak and some a week or so after. However, the peak is very narrow so the numbers per hour before and after the peak are usually small (read: I wouldn't send folks out looking more than a day after the peak).

Sorry to hear that. I, on the other hand, *really* roughed it. :-) The new roof on my place has just the right slope for sky watching so with a pillow, a blanket and some munchies up there it was quite comfy. Fortunately the neighbors all know of my nocturnal activities so no one called the sheriff when seeing a flashlight up there at 4 am. Patrick
PS: Dear friends, Anyone interested, please send me a note quickly. We might get a caption in today's paper, using a photo I took this morning -- assuming any of my photos turned out. The deadline is tight. I might get in one or two quotes in the caption. Thank you again, Joe
