I just received an email from the local Burning Man contingent (really fun group, btw). They've decided to form a non-profit group called Element 11 and in their announcement they note that: "Element 11 refers to the number of salt on the periodic table." While I used to be married to a genius chemist neither the chemist nor the genius rubbed off on me so I may be wrong but I don't think salt is an element but rather a compound made up of the elements sodium and chloride. Any chemists out there that can confirm (or refute) that? Thanks, Patrick
Well I am not a chemist, but 11 is the atomic weight for Na, Sodium. Sodium is prolific in producing a variety of "salts", of which NaCl is one. Perhaps that is what they meant by 11 being the number of salt. Wade

Yes (table) salt is sodium chloride and made up of those two elements - Na and Cl. Jim --- Wade Starks <StarksWC@ldschurch.org> wrote:

I would try to explain it to you, but you would be better served looking here: ;) http://www.webelements.com/webelements/elements/text/Na/key.html Quoting Patrick Wiggins <paw@trilobyte.net>:

They've, obviously, confused the element Na (sodium) with NaCl, the ionic compound. They must think Na is a salt. It's an alkali metal. However, Na is number 11 on the periodic table so they got that part correct. I guess "Element 11" is more flashy than "Compound 11-17". Chlorine is at position 17 on the periodic table, a halogen. I can confirm that salt is not an element. Element 11 is sodium, one of the elements in table salt, sodium chloride, NaCl. Patrick Wiggins wrote:
