It's pretty boring up there. http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime/realtime-update.html Deloy
In white light, I'd have to agree with you, Deloy. Looks like solar minimum today. But in H-a, there is a goodly amount of prominence action around 2/3 of the solar circumference, including one prominence with a detached, arch-like segment that almost parallels the solar limb. Also a bit of surface detail, although it takes a bit of tuning to bring it into view. The PST loves old-style, narrow-field eyepieces. Kellners and orthos excell with the narrow FOV inherent to the PST itself. Makes using it much easier than with more modern, wide FOV eyepieces. Remember that as the angle of the light cone increases (wider FOV eyepieces), the wider the required tuning band becomes. More "fiddling". As you move around the limb, don't be afraid to tweak the tuning ring. Features will pop into view that weren't visible when the other side of the sun was tuned-in in a different part of the field. The same goes for detail on the disk itself rather than the limb. Another day in the life of a G2V yellow dwarf. Shine on, brother, shine on. No new sunspots today, but there continues to be a fair number of smallish prominences around 2/3 of the solar disk circumference, including a loop and one that may morph into a loop in the next few minutes. Not a day for white-light scopes, but if you have H-a capability, it's worth a look.
No fewer than THREE arch prominences, right NOW (check this post's time stamp). The third one is puny, but still showing the arch formation. Not a bad show for little surface detail. *Chuck's Tip Of The Day:* Buy a PST. Sell one of the kids, if you have to. It's worth it. The PST won't disappoint you nearly as much as the kid. Sell the one with the worst grades. I hear prices are high in Thailand and Mexico these days. ;-)

Thanks for the heads up. And depending on how one defines a arch there could be as many as four.

Or if you don't have a spare kid lying about you probably do have an extra kidney: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/04/07/150195037 patrick :)
I imbibe, I need my kidneys. Kids are much easier to part with. ;-) Many thanks Patrick, I'm taking the PST out once again to look for that fourth arch. Whats the PA? C. On Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 4:32 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

Wow, good observation PW! Patrick is a true professional observer, ladies and gentlemen. He has "the gift" of critical observation, and no doubt. Did you refer to the prominence near the top (pole? I doubt the 'pole' moniker, since such features never occur near the solar pole), just a PA mis-judgement) is actually double! Two prominences within a few MOA of each other along the solar limb. Could be associated with the same sunspot group, just out-of-view beyond the solar horizon. There are at least 6 individual prominence groups visible right now. It took a bit of "fiddling" with the tuning ring on the PST to bring them into view. I'm using a very, very old 18mm ortho eyepiece today, with the PST. Much easier to use than a wide FOV modern eyepiece. Terrific views. Thanks again Patrick! C. On Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 4:46 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

The sun is currently ALIVE with prominences, along much of it's limb! If you have a PST or other H-a filter, I highly advise you to go out and look NOW! I haven't seen this many prominences in a long time. Not huge ones, but the sheer number and morphology is astounding! Go. Observe. NOW! *NOW!*
The Prominence Fest continues! Much activity today, though I'm late at getting to the eyepiece. One prominence verges on the impressive side, in terms of size. Most of the solar limb is alive with Prominences. Hopefully it will continue for this weeks sun party at the NHMU. -your PST poster child.
NHMU looks good so far. Should be a good turnout of scopes. Please save some solar activity for us. Steve

Thanks Dan. I'll be drinking beer with the other in-laws while the family weeps. But my shoulders can be pretty huge, when needed. I lost another old friend and former co-worker last week, who lived to the ripe old age of 84. This has been a bad year as far as losing friends and family. My only consolation is that I'm the one reading the obits, and not the subject! But life is never the same once they've moved on to a better existence, and left us behind. A big hole remains for a long time. Forever, really. Anyway... Steve, you're in luck. There's ONE little sunspot group that has gotten bigger in the last few days and is now almost respectable. The Little Sunspot That Could, lol. The white-light scopes will have something to see besides a blank disk. Good luck at the museum, brother. Prominence activity is very, very good again today. Some of the biggest I've ever seen in the PST continue to adorn the solar limb over practically it's entire circumference. I've seen bigger during Solar Max's of decades past, but these aren't bad at all. This may be my last sun report for a few days, until we return from the funeral. It's in Castledale, not far from The Wedge. Hmmm...I suppose trying to hide the C-6 in the trunk is probably a bad idea, under the circumstances... ;-) On Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 9:18 AM, Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com>wrote:

Solar action continues at a reasonably high pace today. The area associated with yesterday's "largish" prominence continued to produce a large prominence today. Smaller prominences visible over 2/3 of the solar limb. At least three sunspot groups worth mentioning, so white-light-only people aren't left out. Much surface activity in addition to prominences on the limb. Plage and other surface features easily seen in my white-light 50mm scope (Baader filter), in addition to the sunspots, which are obvious in H-a in the PST. There's only one star this close to us, people. Lot's going-on right now to see.
Now nearing sunset, prominence action has diminished noticeably, but there is still an incredible amount of detail visible around the 3 sunspot groups currently visible. I didn't take out the white-light scope, but in H-a, it's enormously interesting. I suspect that a lot of detail will be visible in white-light views, as well. Bed time. 4 AM comes awfully early.
The H-alpha's will be out in force. PST's to......well, we will see. Steve
