I just picked up the laser from Seth about an hour ago. Night cannot come soon enough for me tonight! Wayne A. Sumner Math/Physics/Astronomy/Engineering Boy's Tennis Coach Northridge High School Davis School District (801) 402-8610

Wayne, you're in for a treat! _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Visit the Photo Gallery: http://gallery.utahastronomy.com Visit the Wiki: http://www.utahastronomy.com
Go get a book of matches, Wayne! If the head is a light shade, color it black with a Sharpie. On Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 1:04 PM, Wayne Sumner <wsumner@dsdmail.net> wrote:

The Park Service might get a little nervous over a device with fire starting abilities. Does it come with a warning not to point at dry grass? All we need is another reason to ban them.

There are many easier, and MUCH CHEAPER ways to start fires than with a $200-$300 laser. Seriously, you have to be within a few inches of a match-head to get it to light with one of these lasers, and then hold the laser still for several seconds. It's not like you can point one out your car window while driving and ignite the grass on the side of the road. If your goal is to prevent forest fires, ban all forms of smoking in the parks. (That oughta be interesting.) Seth, The Forest Service says a hot muffler is enough to start a grass fire. Erik

I say BAN mufflers from our parks! *;o)* Seriously, rest easy. The laser only heats dark objects. If the match head is white, it will not ignite. I have to color them black with a Sharpie. I just tried igniting dry grass in my back yard with my laser. Not even a puff of smoke, even after a prolonged period. I'd worry more about a Dobsonian pointed at dry scrub... Just thinking out loud. Did anyone think a PC could cause house fires? Good reason to get a Mac. And Speaking of fires bad news is that smoke is building in atmosphere from So Cal Fires. Another smokey summer?
I was going to discourage someone from trying it, but your own backyard is acceptable. Would not make for good headline. I say BAN mufflers from our parks! *;o)*

I've noticed the reddened sunsets and murky afternoons. I think you may be right, Erik. If the laser ignited my dry grass mulch, only my tomatoes would be lost. My wife would be very upset, but Smokey the bear probably wouldn't care. I think astronomers are probably more fire-safe than most campers, for the simple reason that they eschew the otherwise ubiquitous campfire. Mr. Dakins proved the truth of that several years ago when he nearly perished in a car fire from pulling off the road into some tall grass while experiencing low blood sugar on his way to TSP; lost his car, his 13", a lot of camping gear and most if not all of his eyepieces. He would have also lost his life if a passing motorist hadn't pulled him out of the burning car. The remnants of a burned up 2" Nagler eyepiece was sad enough!

Fires are serious business!
