Re: [Utah-astronomy] Winter Star Party at Great Basin National Park
Joe, There is no a convenient electrical outlet to use. However, I have a couple deep cycle batteries you could use - all you would need to bring is a inverter. Just let me know and I'll get them charged. Hi Kelly, Thanks! I have a generator but it would be annoying to anyone else at a star party. Do you think the batteries could power my laptop all night? I have other batteries that I use for other needs, but it's the laptop that's an electrical hog. I think I have an inverter too, but if not I could buy one. Joe, as you know, the power consumption of your laptop should be labeled somewhere as should the specs on your battery and it is a simple calculation to determine for how long any given battery will keep you going. When I experimented with a laptop/telescope interface I found that for my needs, at least, the jump-start-type battery that I own was sufficient for a full night's use. The computer backup-type batteries that I had, however, were undersized. Let me know what kind of numbers you get when you do the calculations. (Just curious.) Thanks, Kim. I have two functioning laptops and will see which uses less power. I'm do the calculations and let you know. -- Joe --- On Sun, 2/27/11, Kim Hyatt <kimharch@cut.net> wrote:

Note that batteries' performance goes down considerably with temperature. And as their charge is used their output voltage drops, which is a problem for some things but I don't know if or how this affects use via an inverter. It seems odd to take a 12V DC battery, invert it to 120V AC, and then convert it down to 19V DC (or whatever your laptop requires); it seems there ought to be a more efficient way. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Joe Bauman Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2011 11:59 AM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Winter Star Party at Great Basin National Park Hi Kelly, Thanks!
