I feel the same way about the "sun tunnel". Leave the concrete in the city. Art has it's place, but the near-wilderness isn't it. Just because something lines-up with the sun doesn't add mystical significance to it. It's an eyesore. You said it very well, Joe. "You can't improve on nature." AUGGGH! That hideous "tree"!!! What really offended me when it was dedicated is that the artist claimed he was improving the salt flats. You can't improve on nature. The flats have their own eerie beauty. jb
This is wandering way off-topic, but I would also include big white letters painted on the sides of perfectly lovely mountains by perfectly childish HS and College age folk apparently feeling the need, like dogs, to "mark their turf". --- Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

But, Rich, what if it's on the west slope of a mountain? The rising sun or moon would be seen above it in the morning, a couple of days a year! Or if on the eastern slope, the setting sun or moon. A "U" is the first letter of "Universe", and "Y" is the last letter in "Astronomy", so you simply MUST like them! Maybe an art museum could buy them for a dollar, and place them somewhere else, preserved, for future generations to revere... ;o) You know, high-shool and college students may use concrete, but I think astronomers mark their turf in the same way as canines...especially if there is no outhouse at the observing site... But that is the only reward for driving through Battle Mountain NV On May 21, 2007, at 9:09 AM, Richard Tenney wrote:

There are a couple of rewards for driving through Battle Mountain Nevada, one being you're that much closer to Reno, and the other, you're that much closer to Lake Tahoe. Two great places to see stars. ;) Quoting William Biesele <bill@biesele.net>:
