I agree. We should hold the swap meet further south this year. It would be nice to find a place near a freeway exit to that all of us from the north don't get lost. I am fairly new to SLAS. When is the swap meet usually held? Is it mostly hobby parts, or scopes, accessories, etc as well? Thanks you, Jim Stitley --- David Dunn <david.dunn@albertsons.com> wrote:

Hi Jim: The annual swap meet is not a SLAS function, or any other incorporated local club. It is strictly an informal affair organized by the utah-astronomy list members. The list consists of members of all the local clubs, we're kind of a little "United Nations" of regional amateurs. (That makes Cynthia "Secretary General"!) Ron Vanderhule of the Ogden club is the originator of the swap meet. This will be our third year, so it seems that a tradition has been started! Location is usually determined by concensus, or by the generosity of a property owner in the area. Everyone is welcome, whether a club member or not. There is no charge to attend, or to set up a table and sell. Anything can be brought for sale, the only qualifier being that items must be related to telescope-making or astronomy in general. Weather permitting, we sometimes hold an informal sun-party during the swap meet. It will probably be another month or so before plans are finalized for this year, look for announcements on this list. Hope to see you there! Chuck --- Jim Stitley <sitf2000@yahoo.com> wrote:

If we hold off on the swap meet until the SLAS star parties start, perhaps it could be held at the by then newly opened SPOC 2? Maybe in the afternoon before a star party? The Ealing should be up and running by then (how's the Ealing painting coming, Chuck?). Very unlikely that the Big Scope will be running but the mount should be in there and boy is it impressive! Tube might be there too (provided Chucks gets the stuff he needs from Intermountain Optics by then) and it may be even more impressive than the mount. Patrick

I can't speak for the list, but I think it should definitely be post-Olympics. Beyond that, the later we hold it, the better the weather is likely to be.
The Ealing should be up and running by then (how's the Ealing painting coming, Chuck?).
Very good progress. It is completely stripped and has had two coats of primer. A couple of the components already have their final coat of paint, including the main tube and largest casting. Depending on the paying jobs we get in here, it could be done in the next one to three weeks.

Even if IO doesn't get the optical supports done soon, the big tube will be finished and sent out to the site. It only needs it's final coat of paint. I am re-doing the fan system to blow on the mirror's face, but this isn't critical for operation, and can be added later. Bruce brought the cradle assembly yesterday, and we have started prepping and painting it also. It should be the last component to come to this shop for completion. I'd be very surprised if the whole thing (Less optical supports) isn't done in the next month, at the longest. Gary Liptrot came by for a visit the other day, and the invitation to everyone else is still open. Just call me ahead of time to make sure I'm here: (801)936-8082 ext. 321. And in case other list members don't know this already, Chuck and his company are doing all of this work at no charge to SLAS. Very generous. Chuck, will you be around tomorrow late afternoon or maybe Saturday so I could come by and shoot pictures for "News"? Patrick :-)
Im only here until noon on Fridays, and won't be in at all this weekend, unfortunately. Chuck --- Patrick Wiggins <pwiggins@co.slc.ut.us> wrote:

Hi folks, Thanks Chuck for a great 25 cent tour of the neo-natal SPOC 2 OTA (Optical Tube Assembly). Great job on the prep work and the end caps. One end has a removable off-axis mask that will mount a solar filter. The other end will house the optics and cooling fans. The top-middle has an access panel that will serve several purposes. It looks beautiful, like a '57 Chevy all primed and puttied. You just know in a short time that beast is gonna shine. (excuse me Chuck, I meant a Sopwith Camel, 1916 vintage). I didn't realize that the mirror is a very thin one to boot. I initially thought that we had a five or six inch thick mirror. Can't wait to see the whole thing take shape. Thanks to all who have sacrificed much to bring astronomy to the public in a BIG WAY. While I was at Chuck's work I enjoyed seeing the Patterns and Molds that he makes for a living. Some of the intricate shapes, curves and textures were amazing. I didn't want to keep him away from the job too long so we didn't dally to much but if any of you get a chance I would take him up on his generous invitation. His work place is in North Salt Lake and easy to get to. Tnx agn C.H., 73 es CUL de n7zi Gary Liptrot n7zi@attbi.com

Anybody in Utah county have any suggestions as to location? How about southern S.L. county? Chuck --- David Dunn <david.dunn@albertsons.com> wrote:

I would love to have it further south. Bountiful is a bit too far for me. Even Sandy would be nice. Perhaps a Harmon's parking lot somewhere in south valley? dave --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:

My preference would also be in the southern part of the valley. I am in West Jordan but anywhere around 7000 south or more would be my preference. But, tied into SLOC 2 opening woudl give 2 purposes to travel there. Jim Stitley --- David Moulton <dmoulton@rocketmail.com> wrote:

As I pulled into Skypark this morning, the Sun through the tinting in my windshield was nicely attenuated. I noticed what appear to be two naked eye sunspots, side by side, on the northern hemisphere of the sun. Anyone else seen them? Brent __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Brent and all others on the list, please don't look at the sun through the windshield. I shudder at the potential danger to your eyes. -- Joe
Joe, The complete story is that I carry a welder's glass in my glove box. After seeing the possibility of naked eye sunspots, I use the welder's glass to "stare". I agree that viewing the Sun in other ways is dangerous. Brent --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

Joe, you didn't jump the gun, I just didn't tell the whole story. Much better for folks to be warned than to think their windshields and fog provide needed protection. Thanks for your concern. Brent --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

The further South the better for us of course! I work in Draper (at Fonix Corp, next to the e-bay building just West of I-15 between 123 and 106 S.); I'd imagine the parking lot here would be available on a Saturday no problem if people wanted to set up here... I'll get approval if this location works for the group. Let me know. Rich --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:

Draper works great for me, Rich. Be sure to check on liability issues. Some companies don't like non-employess or customers on their property in case of accident. Chuck --- Richard Tenney <retenney@yahoo.com> wrote:

Just a thought, but those who are familiar with the mega swap meet at RTMC will know that "meat of the meet" is held along the looong sidewalk that leads to the chow hall. By the time SPOC 2 opens in the spring there will be a looong sidewalk leading from the parking area to the observatory. Perfect place for vendors to congregate. Oh, and the rest rooms should be done by then too! What a "relief"... :-) Patrick
