I've said before that cheese, cold beer, and beautiful women are proof of the existence of God and His love for us. Further, I have seen evidence that not all humans have evolved from a more primitive state; some are still primitive- the australopithecene who changed my oil last week and didn't tighten the filter, the early hominid at the DMV who screwed-up my license three times last time I renewed, the Neanderthal telemarketer who can't depart from his script, the young Quest for Fire refugee who keeps calling my daughter and doesn't realize his life is in danger despite repeated warnings, the primate who cut me off in traffic this morning while absorbed with his cell phone. The missing link never went missing, it's still all around us. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! LOL, thanks for the laugh Chuck! Bill, while I completely agree with everything you wrote, I also agree that it's probably time to nip that particular thread in the bud before it gets ugly. Politics are generally worse than religion for stirring up ill will amongst those who would be otherwise good friends. Just last Thursday I ran over one of my telescope truss poles, damaging the clamp, because I was too busy arguing politics with my friend Daniel Turner to pay proper attention to putting my things away. :o) Big mistake! --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:

How about the Meth Addict in Prison who has destroyed his teeth and swears he's going to continue using after he gets out? Not sure what species that is, but it can't be human.. can it... Chuck Hards wrote:

You're absolutely right. I contend that one's humanity has nothing to do with one's genes. Some people make the decision to live as humans and shoulder the prerequisite responsibility; some decide that they can't be bothered with ethics, morality, or strength of character, and are animals. --- Cynthia Blue <leviblue@utahdogs.com> wrote:

OK, I have kept out of this until now, and I will in the future -- I want to run an even-handed pro- and con- story. But I MUST comment on this:
You're absolutely right. I contend that one's humanity has nothing to do with one's genes. Some people make the decision to live as humans and shoulder the prerequisite responsibility; some decide that they can't be bothered with ethics, morality, or strength of character, and are animals.
Some animals are the best persons I have ever known. They may not actually be people in the genetic sense, but they are persons because they have personalities. One of my family's dearest friends for the past 20 years seems to be dying, our sweet cat. The love and understanding she has truly is greater than many people's. Of course, we're heartbroken. I just want to express the thought that I agree with Chuck that one's humanity has nothing to do with one's genes, and offer a minor corrective, as I know he didn't really want to be insulting to animals: some animals do have morality, ethics and strength of character. The people who can't be bothered with those virtues aren't animals like them, they're just jerks. -- Joe
Joe, no worries. I've ammended 'animals' to read 'fungus' (although now I'll probably get hate mail from PETF [People for the Ethical Treatment of Fungus] or the Vegetable Firsters or something.) When I originally wrote "animals", I was thinking bacteria or worms, not higher animals! ;) FWIW, one of my dearest friends is also a cat, Isoroku, who is only 2 years old yet highly intelligent, very loving (especially for a large former male- 14 lbs.). We share a bond that is difficult to describe. He is supposed to be my daughter's cat but he prefers my company. Even my wife is amazed at the bond between us. He's my "little guy" and I prefer his company to many, many "humans". --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

Not only have I always been amazed by the bond among the humans and the cat in our family, I'm astonished by Fur-Fur's understanding of many things, including our language. She definitely understands many words. -- Joe
Each of my horses has a very unique personality, as do both my dogs and every cat I've owned (dozens it seems). I like the Native American sentiment, that we are all God's children, and the animals are his little children. Rich --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

Quoting Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com>:

As evidenced by the occasional clown who walks along deserted mountain roads, at night, making obscene comments to perfect strangers in passing...
