In World War One, the Germans had a very special type of anti-aircraft shell that consisted of several projectiles chained together. As it rose spinning toward the targeted Allied airmen, spitting fire, it was said that it resembled a bunch of giant, green onions. The allied airmen actually referred to it as "flaming onions". So I adopted the term flaming_onions as my eBay user ID. It seems that by 1999, when I signed-up, every ace name on every side had already been taken, as well as every aircraft manufacturer! I primarily deal in WWI model aircraft kits, rare and collectible- I have well over 700 unbuilt, still in the box model airplane kits, all in 1/72 scale, and all of WW1 aircraft. I've been collecting kits since about 1968. You may be surprised to learn that there were more aircraft types in WWI than WW2. Most of the folks I deal with are familiar with the term "flaming onions". So no, it has nothing to do with alternative lifestyle cuisine. Guy, I thought you'd be happy that it was at least a military term! ;) --- diveboss@xmission.com wrote:

Whew! Actually, I thought I'd ran across that term in the amateur proctology correspondence course I'm taking to describe... Well, let's just say, I'm glad you don't have that. ;)
