I've been asked to host another Science Movie Night at the downtown library for the Utah Museum of Natural History. It will be the evening of Tuesday, 3 October. They've tentatively scheduled October Skies. A fun flick but I did that one for them in 2003. Anyone have ideas for a movie? For those who are not familiar with the Science Movie Night concept see http://www.umnh.utah.edu/museum/PublicPrograms/scienceMovieNight.html . Patrick
Hey all, I'm doing a story about the storm. Anyone experience anything interesting? Patrick, what about you? I heard your neck of the woods got a huge amount of rain, quite fast. Thanks, Joe
I got about 12 or so gallons of water in my basement bathroom. The water go so deep in the back yard that it flooded the window well and ran inside.... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe Bauman" <bau@desnews.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 01, 2006 11:56 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Weather -- help wanted, specially from Patrick

Until watching the news tonight, I did not realize how intense the storm was. 12 gallons doesn't sound too serious, but if it is more and you need some help cleaning out the basement, please ask. - Kurt --- Darin Christensen <darinc@comcast.net> wrote:

No water damage in our neighborhood in Granger, but one tree in the entire subdivision did blow-down. My wife's favorite Mountain Ash in our front yard! A five-year-old tree just out of the sapling stage; that's the second tree in that spot to take a hit, in 17 years. I've staked it back up but the prognosis isn't good. It will need to remain staked for at least a couple of years if it survives at all. But all-in-all, I'm counting my blessings. --- Canopus56 <canopus56@yahoo.com> wrote:

Does it have to be related to astronomy, or can it reflect any branch of science? Off the top of my head: * Contact * Jurrasic Park * Solaris (highly recommended, if you like art films) * Serenity * Day the Earth Stood Still * Any of the Indiana Jones trilogy (archeology?) * War of the Worlds (original, not the new one) --- Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

Now why am I not surprised that you would be the first to reply to a message about science movies? :) The movies can be related to any of the sciences but since I'm known as a space geek they have me do movies related to astronomy and space exploration. I already did Contact (another great flick) and have not heard of Solaris. The original War of the Worlds is a classic but (putting on serious cap here) there's too much war in the world right now. Egads, could you imagine how little of Lebanon would be left about now if the IDF had a few of those ray guns? :( (cap off) But Day the Earth Stood Still is one of my favorites too. Thanks for the suggestions. Patrick
Timing. I had just sat down to eat my lunch and checked email while the DVD was starting (watching "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" today during lunch. Hey, show that at science movie night if you want a strong reaction...). Hey Patrick I don't know how scientiic you want to get but here are a few of my favorites: Serenity, Red Planet, Mission To Mars, Contact, Pitch Black (nice depiction of a multi star system not to mention bizzare alien life), Firefox (an oldie but goodie about a stolen experimental MiG), Outbreak, Apollo 13. those are just a few that I could think of off the top of my head, none are too scientific but could lead to some interesting discussion. "2001 A Space Odyssey" followed by a lecture on: 1) What we would thought would happen in low orbit space station construction, lunar exploration and Jovian exploration in the 1950s and 60s (Werner Von Braun article in Look) vs. what did happen. Thanks, Kurt. I very much appreciate the suggestion but, as Chuck pointed out, I did a Science Movie Night based on 2001 a while back. I liked Chuck's suggestion of The Day the Earth Stood Still so when I met with the lady in charge of the program today I suggested we screen that one. With all that's going on in the world just now, it seems somehow fitting to show a movie that touches on how the UN "handles" a crisis. I was supposed to have heard by now if the suggestion was accepted but have not. Stay tuned. Thanks to all who made suggestions. Patrick

That is indeed a good choice and satisfies what I believe good science fiction is about: ie how a world reacts to something new. Humanity's reaction in "The Day..." is all too familiar. All of the movies with light saber battles, starship skirmishes, aliens speaking English, etc hold little interest to me and really belong in the fantasy bins. As entertaining as they may be to many folk, they really don't deserve the moniker 'Science Fiction'. On Aug 1, 2006, at 11:53 PM, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

there is a recent low budget film of the "War of the Worlds" that is true to the original... ie, takes place in England in the right time period.... or a psychological thriller "The Forgotten"..... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patrick Wiggins" <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 01, 2006 11:53 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Re: Movie suggestions sought

Since the movie choice is going off-astronomy-topic, just wanted to wrap with a note that a week or so before your movie, on Sept. 21, 2006, is United Nations International Peace Day a.k.a. Global Ceasefire Day. It's the day that the rest off us try to convince those in armed conflict areas across the world to take one day a year off from killing each other for the reason of [insert favorite stupid excuse for having a war]. Int'l Peace Day Org http://www.internationaldayofpeace.org/un.htm Union Resolution 55/282 http://www.internationaldayofpeace.org/res-55-282.pdf Gotta start somewhere, and one day out of 365 is a good a place to start as anywhere else. Sept. 21 is also the autumnal equinox. Knew there was an astronomy hook in there somewhere. -:) - Canopus56 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
