Deloy Pierce sent me e-mail awhile ago concerning John Elwell, from WISE, who spoke at SLAS. Deloy had asked him if he would be interested in speaking at OAS and he indicated he would. So...Roger, if you have some contact information you can get to me I would like to set him up for a meeting. As long as I am here I might as well put out a feeler for anyone on the list that might have something of interest they would like to share with our group up north in Ogden. We re-imburse for gas and maybe a snack. Ron Vanderhule Prez, OAS
Ron, Here is John Elwell's email address: john.elwell@sdl.usu.edu He gave us a great presentation on project WISE and I think that OAS would find him to be a very good speaker. I will mention to our members the need for you to have speakers and refer them to you. One you need to get is our past president, Dave Bernson: dustynebula@gmail.com He has a presentation on the summer constellations that he gave at ALCON that is superb! You know, I still feel the Constellation was the prettiest airplane that ever was. And it did not matter how you hopped to observe it. What do you think, Joe? Chuck? Although to me, it has to be a biplane to be really pretty.

Check out the Beechcraft model 17 (Staggerwing). This is truly the most magnificent bi-plane, and it first flew in 1932. Last time I checked, (took time off from learning to navigate the night sky without goto) that was after 1918. :) Mat -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Chuck Hards Sent: Tuesday, September 06, 2011 1:42 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] OAS speaker info attn: Roger Fry On 9/6/11, Larry Holmes <larry@kijoda.com> wrote:

I've always loved the DC3, because it's so sturdy and has been a real workhorse for many decades. The military version could fly will all kinds of aitiaircraft damage. Isn't there an updated plane outfitted with the mini-guns, laser guided now I think.
Spooky or Puff the Magic Dragon was a modified C-47 and called a AC-47.

Come on, Steve. I think Jimmie Steward& the Comet deserves at least an acknowledgment, or did you miss it? 73, lh

Steve, at least Jimmie Stewart did not like to fly on the Comet. BTW, was not "Puff, the Magic Dragon" a modified C-47. My first commercial flight was in a DC-3 from Bend, OR to Sacramento, CA in '51 or '52. Ate off china, with real silverware. Men were in suit& tie; ladies in dresses& furs. 73 lh

I don't remember problems with the Constellation tail. (could have been some) Are you thinking of the DeHavilland Comet? With the Square windows that cracked after multiple pressurizations? Steve

I've always loved the DC3, because it's so sturdy and has been a real workhorse for many decades. The military version could fly will all kinds of aitiaircraft damage. But I agree that biplanes are the coolest, and the Constellation is great-looking. (Somehow, I have an impression that the Constellation had a fatal flaw with that tail -- or am I thinking about another plane? Can anybody figure out what my poor old brain is trying to drag out of the murk of the past?) -- Joe

Larry,
They only served L&O in first-class! And Yes, the Constellation was very sexy.

You know, I still feel the Constellation was the prettiest airplane that ever was. And it did not matter how you hopped to observe it. What do you think, Joe? Chuck? Wonder if they served L& O aboard?? (I know they served VO, but you did not want an onion in that.) heehee lh
