Nice shot from the surface of Mars. I like how the rover's shadow can be seen in the distance. http://www.planetary.org/blog/article/00003387/ patrick
What is the phenomenon called that you see around the distant shadow of the rover? Would that be an aura, halo, or? -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Patrick Wiggins Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2012 11:38 PM To: utah astronomy listserve utah astronomy Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Mars "postcard" Nice shot from the surface of Mars. Hey Kim! I was going to say it was the Heiligenschein but then I thought it probably isn't dew: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heiligenschein It looks to be the opposition effect: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opposition_effect and upon further reading the article that is what they claim it to be. Hope this finds you and yours well in 2012! Dave Bennett On Feb 22, 2012, at 01:02 PM, Kim <kimharch@cut.net> wrote: What is the phenomenon called that you see around the distant shadow of the rover? Thanks, Dave. "Glory" is the name I was looking for, but of course it can't really be that - can it? I did read further about the photo but I first misunderstood what was written about the opposition effect. We're well - thanks for asking. Hope you and the bride are fine!
