Anyone viewed the jet in M-87 visually? I am going to try in both the 14 inch and in my 20 inch this spring. Based on what I have researched the 20 should not be a problem and with the right conditions the 14 should be able to view it. Thoughts or insights? Anyone image it? Sent from my iPod

I picked up this little DMK21 Monochrome CCD for planetary work. It can shoot at 640X480 at up to 60 minutes - but is made mainly for planetary work to function as a CCD webcam. I shot a few galaxies last night waiting for Saturn to rise. I didn't expect much from such a small sensor, but it framed them quite nicely and surprised me with the amount of detail it captured. I couldn't get it in focus with the filter wheel on and no barlow, so they are all monochrome. Excellent images, David. Isn't your imaging OTA a Newt? I was surprised to see a lack of diffraction spikes. Can't wait for the color shots!
Thanks Chuck, It is a newt. The secondary spider has very thin legs. The spikes only show up on bright stars - the stars in these shots are actually very small and dim - they just look big because the sensor is really small. David On 3/23/11 12:28 PM, Chuck Hards wrote:

I really can't say I know much about the camera. It is my first CCD and I picked it up for planetary work, didn't realize it would perform well for deep space. I am bummed out it is only 8bit though. You can see some diffraction spikes on the Cigar shot coming through. This is really making me want a better CCD for deep space work *sigh*. Guess I will just have to win the lottery. Here is the camera I shot these with. It's a usb version. Luminance (clear filter).
Also, what was the exposure?
300 seconds. FYI, the above and a lot of other data are included in the FIT header.
Was it taken with your 14-inch?
Yes, C-14 @ f/5.5, though I'm guessing the native f/11 would work better.
I'm starting to think I shouldn't even try.
You'll never know until you try. With your longer focal length and willingness to spend more time that I am at image processing you might just do even better. Good luck, patrick
Hi Joe and anyone else who is interested, It's such a nice night tonight that once I finished with my regular imaging I turned to M-87 again. This time I shot 20 one minute guided exposures with the clear filter. And, unlike the other night, there is no Moon in the sky. And judging from the images, the seeing is much better too. Again, the jet is there but just barely. However, I've a feeling that someone willing to put in the time to stack the images and then do a bit of processing might be able to make a better shot. Anyone care to give it a go? Let me know if you are and I'll zip and post tonight's images along with a master dark and master flat for download. patrick On 24 Mar 2011, at 01:06, Joe Bauman wrote:

It's such a nice night tonight that once I finished with my regular imaging I turned to M-87 again.

Nice work Don. Actually using Photoshop I was able to bring out a bit more detail: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/m87-f4.jpg The jet looks a lot like the F-4s I worked on in Vietnam. :) But seriously, now that I see what 20 one minute exposures will do I'm going to try 4 five minute exposures and see if there's any difference. patrick On 26 Mar 2011, at 08:42, Don J. Great night last night so I did as promised and shot four 5 minute exposures of M-87. http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/m87-2011mar29.zip I'll be interested to see if 4 5' do better (or worse) at showing the jet than 20 1'. 'Couse I suppose some industrious person could put all 24 images together for a total 40 minutes of exposure time. patrick On 26 Mar 2011, at 15:40, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

Hi Patrick, I'll try with this bunch. I have a hunch that a group of relatively shorter exposures, like the previous ones you did, will be better for showing the jet than longer ones. But I'm not sure how long is too long. Sounds fun. Thanks, Joe --- On Tue, 3/29/11, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:
