Re: [Utah-astronomy] Relativity Question
If two beams of light are leaving the Big Bang at the same time traveling in opposite directions, what is their time relative to each other? If they travel for one year in their time are they two light years apart? Or is it less because if they are two light years apart, they would be traveling at two times the speed of light relative to each other?
Aaron, this probably only adds to your confusion, but it's my understanding that no time passes from the point of view of the photon. So there are no relatavistic violations between the two light beams in your example. Of course, this all violates the heck out of my brain. I'm still working on gravity. And gravity's still working on me. Michael
Aaron, I think they would be two light years apart. Example: If Michael were on the head end of one of those beams of light, and I was on the head end of the other, at the end of a years time, he and I would be separated by a total distance of 2 light years. Here's another example, if I were to fire a bullet straight into a mirror, how many years of bad luck would I have? :( Quoting Michael Carnes <michaelcarnes@earthlink.net>:

If the mirror is made of sturdy enough stuff, your "bad luck" might be measured in milliseconds :) If it is a 24 inch Zambuto, it would depend on how fast the owner could move... I'm guessing up to 30 seconds..... Jo At 03:09 PM 7/6/2005 -0600, you wrote:

The mirror I was thinking of was more on the lines of a 24" Henway. ;) What's a Zambuto? Quoting Josephine Grahn <bsi@xmission.com>:

Isn't it that thing that smooths the ice at a hockey game? ;) Seriously, he is a mirror maker of high reputation who charges accordingly. I think Steve will agree that the mirror doesn't care whose name is on the label, as long as the figure is diffraction-limited. I'm not sure if he is still living, but the greatest craftsman of the ("mass-produced") optical fabricator's art whom I am aware of was Alika Herring. He worked for Tom Cave for a while before setting up his own shop. His mirrors, figured by hand and eye in a pre-interferometric day, still test absurdly, unbelieveably well- better than contemporary makers can consistently match. He was hired by the government to scout-out observatory sites and used his own personal 12.5" mirror for the site survey work. Without looking it up, (as a matter of expediency), I'm thinking he was responsible for recommending the Mauna Kea site. C. __________________________________ Discover Yahoo!
