I've been trying to find out what other observers from the ground may have seen last night when Deep Impact took place. We took the telescope an Odyssey 8 out to watch. Seeing and darkness were excellent. Using coordinates I got from "Cartes du Ciel" software of RA 13:38:09 Dec -09:33:13 and plotting this point in the Uranometria 2000, I star hopped to it from Spica. I'm not even sure the coordinates were correct. There was a very faint < 9.5 magnitude (by my estimation) object not shown in the Uranometria at this spot. It was the sort of thing that needed averted vision even through the telescope to see. I wasn't sure if it was the comet or if it was just a star fainter than the Uranometria plots. Shortly after the impact time, either my eyes adjusted so I could see it better or it actually brightened to around 9.5 or maybe even 9.0. I no longer needed averted vision to see it, but that was about it. I'd be interested to hear what others may have observed.
