I have been invited to speak to a group of neighborhood girl scouts in a couple of weeks. They would like to hear about eclipses. Darn - I have good presentations on black holes and the discovery of planets outside of our solar system... Anyway, am I reading my NASA eclipse home page correctly by assuming that we will see glimpses of two lunar eclipses this coming year? I get the feeling that from here they will be pretty un-exciting. Am I correct? -A
Check your Observer's Handbook 2007, pp. 121 & 123. There are graphics illustrating exactly what you can expect for any geographic location. If you don't have a copy, Ann, let me know and I can scan the graphics and send them to you. --- Ann House <ann@annhouse.org> wrote:

Chuck, I didn't order a new handbook. Maybe I will win one as a door prize at the Solstice Festival. I hope you can make it - and everyone else! It will be a fun event. Until I get one, yes, I would love it if you could copy the illustrations for me to see. Thanks! So Patrick, are you saying the Aug 28 event is 4-5 am? -A

Yes. See: http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/OH/image1/LE2007Aug28-Fig3.GIF Let's hope for clear skies. pw

The only portion of the 03 MAR eclipse visible from Utah will be the tail end of the penumbral phase. Nothing I'd recommend anyone try to see. The one on 28 AUG will be a total, easily seen from Utah, weather permitting, (http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/files/UTECLIPS.TXT) albeit in the wee hours of the morning. Event Time Elevation MDT (from SPOC) Umbral starts: 0251 34° Total starts: 0352 28° Mid eclipse: 0437 22° Total ends: 0523 15° Umbral ends: 0624 05° I'm looking forward to 2012 (annular in S. Utah) and 2017 (solar total in OR, ID and WY). pw
