Chuck, In this case, the debate about refractor verses reflector would definitely weigh in favor of the refractor. Try hitting a bear with your 16-inch DOB. Rodger C. I'm kinda surprised that he didn't have a Smith & Wesson refractor. What kind of wildlife biologist goes into bear county without repellent or at least a large caliber weapon? You can identify brown bears by their scat. Typically the droppings contain bear repellent canisters. On Wed, May 1, 2013 at 7:15 AM, Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com>wrote:

Well, that family was out bird watching, using a terrestrial telescope. This seemed to be of some help, in fighting of a terrestrial bear. I live in La Sal, near Moab, and so I feel safer having an astronomical telescope... to protect me from extraterrestrial bears... Actually, on those few occasions that I do bring my telescope out, I bring my loaded 12-Gauge shotgun out, also. I have seen a bear behind my cabin, and I once scared off a mountain lion when I stepped out onto my porch to look at the late-night sky... )

Never heard of him. Is he an old-timer or a newbie (post-1985)? I haven’t met many of the newbies and I don’t go back there much since I sold my mother’s house. I called my friend in Moab who owns the only office-supply store in town (knows more newbies than me by a long shot). He’s never heard of him. What does he do in Moab? There’s not much.
