Nice pass of ISS tonight (Tuesday) between 21:08 and 21:14. Nearly straight overhead from SLC about 21:11. Interestingly, it looks like it's going to pass in front of the Moon as seen from SPOC. Patrick

Success! (finally...) ISS zipped right in front of the Moon right on schedule. Using 11x80s I saw it ingress and egress the Moon but could not see it transit. Margaret Grim had the same experience using smaller binoculars. Bruce did see it using a small refractor. Happily, I got this one on video. Will try and convert it to digital and post it to the web soon. Many thanks to CalSky.Com for making the accurate prediction. Was anyone else able to see the transit or maybe a very close miss? Patrick
Congrads Patrick! It was a nice bright (-1.7m) overpass from the Aves in SLC, but missed the Moon by at least 3 degrees. Guess it is all in the topocentric position. Waiting to see the video. I'm also showing overpasses on: Wed May 10, 2006, 21:34:19 MDT 0.4 mag (later but dimmer maybe doable) Fri May 12, 2006, 20:46:16 MDT 0.7 mag (probably not doable, too dim and too close to Sunset.) Haven't checked the sky chart on CalSky to see if there is a lunar transit involved. Tracks on both nights are similar to Tuesday - Wed ingress az 293 WNW egress az 177 Fri ingress az 293 WNW egress az 159 - Canopus56 --- Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

Hi, 3 degrees?! I didn't think it would be that far off. I've got my hands full in my observatory at the moment (taking advantage of every minute of dark, clear skies). Should have the video ready later today. I'll put the link in News. Cheers! Patrick
Back in September several members of the discussion group recommended the Firefly series that was cancelled by Fox and the related movie, Serenity. Last night I checked out Serenity from Holliwood Video and I was impressed (though it could have used a bit more editing). It had great atmosphere, particularly the use of Japanese characters, and odds and ends like a coffee mug. Thanks for the tip! I'll have to check out the Firefly episodes. Now if I could only find the new Doctor Who episodes on DVD. -- Joe
The new Dr Who Season 1 should be available on July 1st for purchase. :) Such a great show I'm loving it! I liked Firefly/Serenity too. Cyn Joe Bauman wrote:

Well, I'll be in line for a DVD of the good doctor! Where would I find it for sale? Thanks, Joe
Looks like you can get it on Amazon. http://www.gallifreyone.com/storeshelf.php?id=dvd Good page for lots of Dr Who info. =) Cyn Joe Bauman wrote:

Very cool -- I guess the July 1 date is when it will be available in the U.S., so I'll wait until then instead of ordering it from Britain. Best wishes and thanks, Joe
Oh, I'm wrong -- the box set is already available! Will be getting it. Thanks, Joe
The network tried it's hardest to destroy the series from the start. There were originally 15 episodes shot but only 12 of those made it on the air that season. Insult on top of injury, the episodes were not run on TV in chronological order. I believe that the box set has all 15 included and they are in order... Hey, Gary, good to hear from you! I bought the Serenity set last December, based in part on Rich's recommendation. There were 14 episodes shot, and all are included in the set. I must agree that it's some of the best SF writing to come to TV in a long time. My favorite quote: "When do we go to the crappy planet where -I'm- a hero?" As for Dr. Who...my mom has been a fan for decades, so I've been exposed to it for as long. In fact I bought the entire Dapol action-figure collection for her, including the Tardis. These are no longer in production so I imagine they are worth quite a bit. Also the talking Daleks, etc., etc. She also has several autographed photos of cast members, including 2 Doctors and I believe Tom Baker is one of them. I made her promise to will them to me when she "no longer needs them", so hopefully I can recoup my "investment" one day. Honestly I can't see what the Dr. Who fans see in that series, but God bless them if it makes them happy. --- Gary Liptrot <n7zi@comcast.net> wrote:

Joe, Actually they speak (when swearing mostly!) in Chinese; in this particular future, English and Chinese are the two surviving languages of Earth's decendants. Too bad you didn't watch Firefly first; Serenity makes a lot more sense (and has much more emotional impact) after getting to know the characters in Firefly; it's like watching season two before watching season one. Anyway, glad you liked it. I also know many Dr. Who fans, but could never get through enough of any particular show to get hooked (they just seem... I dunno, silly/cheesy -- is that how they are supposed to be, not to be taken seriously?); like Chuck I just don't get the appeal. I suppose if I just start at the beginning, like anything else... --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

Rich, like you I genuinely tried. My mom has entire walls covered with VHS tapes, DVD's, and, yes, even Betamax tapes of the Good Doctor's (all of them) adventures. But even mind-altering substances couldn't make it stick! I have two theories on why Doctor Who appeals to some people. First, it could be that British campy genre, like Benny Hill, Red Dwarf, Hitchhiker's Guide, etc. For the average human, it's good in small doses, but I'm convinced that your brain has to be wired in a certain way to appreciate a steady diet of it. I think this is the reason most people whom I know, happen to like it. I hope. --- Richard Tenney <retenney@yahoo.com> wrote:

Patrick, I tried the link to your ISS Moon transit movie in today's News, but it would not run from a Windows machine. The Qtime player was looking for a codec unique to your local computer. Suggest reposting with a generic video mpeq format. Just a head's up. - Canopus56 --- Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

Patrick, The iMac I have at work won't run your movie, but maybe my PC at home will. Best wishes, Joe
