Re: [Utah-astronomy] SR-14 rock slide
You could also use SR-143 from Panguitch thru Cedar Breaks and Parowan. Deloy Pierce
The slide hit at mile 8 up Cedar Canyon. Follow the signs to Brian Head resort then go south to Cedar Breaks if the road is open. It all depends on the snowpack. I saw patches of snow up at Cedar Breaks in July of this year. Debbie On Thu, Oct 13, 2011 at 10:28 AM, D P Pierce <starsbirdsglyphs@gmail.com>wrote:

I remember being at a view point, in Cedar Breaks, and looking down on Brian Head at the top of a ski lift. Is does not seem hard for snow to linger there.

I have taken that road so many times, I don't think what road it is. It's just the road to Cedar Breaks to me. I checked Google Earth - YIKES SR 14 is MY road. Thanks so much for the heads up!! I realize the slide is serious, but that is a major route from Cedar City to Cedar Breaks and other locations. I can't imagine that they won't work hard to clear it quickly (i.e., as fast as they can) I can't remember specifically mile marker 8, but that must be where it really starts to climb, near the top. That is going to be bear to clear. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debbie" <astrodeb@beyondbb.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, October 13, 2011 7:35:33 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] SR-14 rock slide The slide hit at mile 8 up Cedar Canyon. I'm thinking of taking SR-143 tomorrow to Yankee Meadows. I turn left at mile 5 so I won't go up to Brian Head. I'm just wondering if the fishing is better at Panguitch Lake because of the SR-14 closure? Maybe people from Las Vegas will go elsewhere? There may be a silver lining here. Here's a minimal KSL story on the slide: http://www.ksl.com/?nid=968&sid=17639954
The slide on the road from Provo to Price was much larger, I am betting it will be open by then.
I am thinking wether or not Cedar Breaks is open by then will be the issue, sounds like you could still get to Cedar Breaks via Long Valley Junction. I have taken that road so many times, I don't think what road it is. It's

This planet has a dynamic crust. Nothing humans do is permanent. We need to accept that.
I used to drive that road frequently, I thought they had a temporary road in under a year. I imagine that it was a much higher priority than 14 though. It was open well before the project was completed.

You could reach Cedar Breaks from Long Valley junction by taking a right at the fire station near Duck Creek Village. This road goes into some wonderful lava flows to the right that are spectacular. Then make a left on 143 and head up to road to Cedar Breaks. I'd really like to take this stretch of road down to Panguitch Lake sometime. You go from 10,450 ft elevation to about 6000 ft at Panguitch Lake. There is lots of wildlife on this road as well. Debbie On Fri, Oct 14, 2011 at 4:18 PM, <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> wrote:

Wow, that's quite a slide. From the limited pictures the problem it seems is that it's not just a bunch of dirt covering the road but rather that the road itself was part of it. The whole mountain side appears unstable. They are going to have to do some serious analysis before determining that it is safe to even rebuild the road at that point.
What's Navajo Lake like?

The slide hit at mile 8 up Cedar Canyon. Follow the signs to Brian Head resort then go south to Cedar Breaks if the road is open. It all depends on the snowpack. I saw patches of snow up at Cedar Breaks in July of this year.

When all 4 lanes were done.
What do you mean when you say "before the project was completed?" 73, lh

Eric, it took UDOT several years to complete their new road up the
backside of Billy's mountain. The railroad had 2 tunnels dug and the tracks back in operation before UDOT even moved a piece of earth. 73, lh

I am thinking wether or not Cedar Breaks is open by then will be the issue, sounds like you could still get to Cedar Breaks via Long Valley Junction.
I have taken that road so many times, I don't think what road it is. It's
just the road to Cedar Breaks to me.

I pulled this account from Wiki, their account puts the closer at about a year and is of a much larger magnitude than SR-14.
"Starting in the spring of 1983, US-6 was a discontinuous route for almost one year, due to a massive landslide that destroyed the town of Thistle. During this time traffic was routed on two detours. One, via Salina, Utah, was over 200 miles (320 km) long and took traffic almost 100 aerial miles from the route of US-6. The other, via Duchesne, Utah, was shorter. However, this detour traversed steep grades and was not recommended for trucks. The night before the rebuilt US-6 opened, the highway stubs at either side of the landslide were filled with tens of miles of trucks, the drivers tired of the lost revenue from the long detours. The landslide remains the most costly in the history of the United States.[7] Two rest areas along US-6 pay tribute to the residents of the town who lost" When all 4 lanes were done.

That route may be closed in may due to snow.
