Hi, I'm redoing my ambassador web site but while I can see it, I just heard from a friend who says the page times out when he tries to go to it. I'd appreciate it if a bunch of y'all on the list could try going to the following URL and let me know: 1) If you can see it. 2) If you can not see it. 3) The operating system you are using. 4) The browser you are using. Here's the URL: http://www.trilobyte.net/paw/test.html Thank you, Patrick

The list of responders is now too long to list everyone so rather than risk missing someone I'll just say thanks to all who have replied. Fortunately most who replied did so off list, otherwise the list would have been choked. Since everyone who has replied said they could see the page and no one here has reported negative results, there's no need for any more replies. BTW, I asked what OS each was using and I was surprised that about 3/4 of you are running Macs. A truly enlightened group to be sure. Ok, having said that, I'd best run for cover as the Dark Side mounts a counter attack... :-) Patrick

Not to start a new controversy but the Big Bang Theory is in trouble. See the Scientific American Article, "Is the Universe out of Tune", August 2005. Recent studies of the microwave background radiation call into serious question whether inflation theory as currently proposed is correct. If inflation doesn't work then back to drawing boards since it is critical to the big bang theory. The Big Bang Theory has continued to suffer from adhoc modifications. That doesn't mean it isn't true but we need to look at all of the evidence including objectively examining the concerns of Arp, Narlikar, Burbidge and the late Fred Hoyle. The book "A Different Approach to Cosmology" (Cambridge University Press, 2000) raises several serious issues with the Big Bang Theory. Don, I agree with you that the Big Bang is, indeed, a scientific theory, and part of what I love about science is the constant addition of knowledge which, over time, adds to, changes or totally disproves an accepted scientific theory. You, I, and most of the people on this news group also clearly understand that a scientific theory explains observed phenomenon, is supported by facts, tested against real data and refined as new research adds to our knowledge base. It is an entirely different definition than that used by someone who, for instance, "has a theory about why the idiot next door decided to cut his tree down without thinking about the power lines in the way...." It is that variance in the understanding of what "theory" means that is being used by clever politicians to insert personal belief into science education. Nevertheless, scientifically speaking, Big Bang Theory is legitimate, and I do not object to the term. The part of the article under discussion which caused me such dismay is capitalized (by me) in the quote below. <<<<The Big Bang memo came from Mr. Deutsch, a 24-year-old presidential appointee in the press office at NASA headquarters whose résumé says he was an intern in the "war room" of the 2004 Bush-Cheney re-election campaign. A 2003 journalism graduate of Texas A&M, he was also the public-affairs officer who sought more control over Dr. Hansen's public statements. In October 2005, Mr. Deutsch sent an e-mail message to Flint Wild, a NASA contractor working on a set of Web presentations about Einstein for middle-school students. The message said the word "theory" needed to be added after every mention of the Big Bang. THE BIG BANG IS "NOT PROVEN FACT; IT IS OPINION," MR. DEUTSCH WROTE, ADDING, "IT IS NOT NASA'S PLACE, NOR SHOULD IT BE TO MAKE A DECLARATION SUCH AS THIS ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF THE UNIVERSE THAT DISCOUNTS INTELLIGENT DESIGN BY A CREATOR." IT CONTINUED: "THIS IS MORE THAN A SCIENCE ISSUE, IT IS A RELIGIOUS ISSUE. AND I WOULD HATE TO THINK THAT YOUNG PEOPLE WOULD ONLY BE GETTING ONE-HALF OF THIS DEBATE FROM NASA. THAT WOULD MEAN WE HAD FAILED TO PROPERLY EDUCATE THE VERY PEOPLE WHO RELY ON US FOR FACTUAL INFORMATION THE MOST.">>>>> I would love for kids to be challenged and excited by the idea that they can pursue a course of study and investigation which might, someday, prove or disprove or create entirely new scientific theories. I want them to know that "We do not yet know why X is the way it is" is a valid scientific response, and that "Because God made it so" is a valid belief, but not part of science. Jo
I was not really addressing the article in question just an aside that the Big Bang still has several problems. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces+djcolton=piol.com@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces+djcolton=piol.com@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Josephine Grahn Sent: Sunday, February 06, 2005 1:59 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: RE: [Utah-astronomy] A disturbing ID article Don, I agree with you that the Big Bang is, indeed, a scientific theory, and part of what I love about science is the constant addition of knowledge which, over time, adds to, changes or totally disproves an accepted scientific theory. No, no offense at all with your or anyone else's comments. I enjoy a good discussion. It's just that string theory is an interesting problem and I like to chew on it. I have a special interest because my son's area of research might have some bearing on it -- if only I could understand his project. I am always filled with wonder about the universe and I love being challenged to use my "thinking thingy" (as a Bagley cartoon referred to that itchy gray mass between our ears). -- Joe
