Re: [Utah-astronomy] Low Temperature Grease
Kurt, Thought I'd let you know how I've got on with my Vixen GP-DX regrease efforts - not well. After the mount locked up as I described earlier on the main load surface RA I had to pound the shaft out with a hammer - a big one, with a lump of wood between it and the shaft. It was a bit surreal wacking it after babying it for years. Anyway, I have a badly damaged bushing as the shaft seems to have scoured in three places. I'm presently looking at getting a new one made up, its aluminium, the shaft is steel which fortunately survived the abuse. Cheers David

Sorry to hear that. With the cost of a Vixen mount - which is way beyond my means - it's gotta hurt. This underscores the idiocy of manufacturers who skimp a few dollars a few dollars - forcing many north of 40 N users to have to risk the regrease procedure.
Cheers Tongue-in-cheek I hope.
I'm deferring disassembling my mount while I do other astro projects. However, I try to swing by the supplier I mentioned, get some of that low temperature grease and throw it in the freezer. With your experience, I think I really want to make sure that grease says non-solid as advertised. - Canopus56(Kurt) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? I have some Dow Corning 33, really cold resisting, -400 degree stuff if you would like to use some. I brought it with me from my first marriage. ;) Just kidding. It's good for gun parts that must function in sub zero climates. Quoting Canopus56 <canopus56@yahoo.com>:

Can I come over and borrow a cup of grease? -:) Yah, if you can throw a dollup into a plastic baggie sufficient to regrease an EQ6 and bring it to the next club meeting, I'd appreciate it. If you forget in the meantime - no big deal. - Canopus56(Kurt) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
