Today Yahoo! decided that everything in my Trash file for the last week or so needed to go back into my In box, and I can't delete any of them. My Inbox is nearly full as a result. Until I can get ahold of a human being at Yahoo! (surprisingly difficult so far), please use my office address if you need to correspond with me. chuckh@companionsystems.com Im really sick of Yahoo! If they can't fix the problem, I'll have to abandon this address. I've threatened this before, this time I might have to actually do it. Chuck a good free email that I use a lot is at http://www.softhome.net you can access it either thru the web or thru a POP3 client like Netscape Communicator, Outlook, or Eudora. It's not completely great, but it's pretty fair. :) Cyn
I know so many people who have their own issues with Yahoo - from email, to clubs being shut down to even the used-to-be-free Personals. Yahoo seems to be turning off all their loyal customer base. It is impossible to reach anyone. But, just a few months ago when a teen took a huge security problem public when AOL could not be reached or would not respond., AOL got very critical they weren't contacted first. Well, it backfired big time on AOL! These huge internet companies have grown too big to manage their business and customers. Yhaoo used to be light years ahead of AOL in customer support/service, but no more - they are in a head-to-head race for poorest service. Jim Stitley --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:

Chuck, Guess I'm the exception; I have 4 yahoo accounts, not counting the other 4 that my wife and kids use; we have never had any major problems like what you describe. Forgive me for playing dumb, but I assume you've tried to delete these errant files both ways (1:hitting the delete button while reading the message and 2:checking the check-box in your inbox next to the message and then clicking on "delete checked messages")? Both ways have always worked for me. What happens when you do either of these things? (I'm just really curious!) Also, I always make it a point to hit the "empty trash" link just about every other day to clean up the trash folder (I do get a lot of spam in this particular account). Anyway, assuming you've already tried all that obvious stuff, I can see why you are frustrated; good luck contacting a "real" person on the other end... I have no idea how much money Yahoo mail (or any of the free email services) generates through ad banners (and/or perhaps spam) for the parent company, but I suspect it isn't a whole lot. For providing me with a way to keep in touch with various people around the world, I'd say I sure get more than my money's worth from these guys, problems notwithstanding. My 2 cents (heck, I don't even pay that!) Rich --- Jim Stitley <sitf2000@yahoo.com> wrote:

As somebody who works for one of these large Internet companies, I have to put in my $0.02 to let people know that a lot of what used to be free services on the web are either disappearing altogether, or becoming non-free mainly because of what has happened in the economy. Banner-advertising just doesn't pay the bills like it used to and so most Internet companies (mine included) have had to trim staff, in some cases very drastically, so getting quality support will likely be very hard in many cases, because you can only pay so many warm bodies with the limited money flowing around these days. So, I doubt that the companies like what's happening, but they have to be subject to current market conditions. FWIW, Dan Hanks On Thu, 7 Feb 2002, Jim Stitley wrote:

Hi Chuck, Since I'm not sure if your regular email account is working just now, and since there are probably a few on this list who would like to know, I'll ask here how the tube for the Big Scope is coming and when we might expect to see it out at SPOC 2. Anxious Patrick :-)

Well, first off, chuckhards@yahoo.com is a dead address. I cannot delete old messages, the account has filled to it's max, and new messages simply bounce back to their senders. Yahoo has no avenue for human contact, and none of the on-line help links are appropriate. Delete it from your address books. If it comes back to life, I may keep it only for contact from S & T readers. I've been in contact with Vaughn, and we have resolved some of the engineering issues related to optical support. He is now mulling over my last concern, and once I get a reply on that subject, there will be no remaining design issues. Even this matter is small, but as it concerns the exact position of the primary mirror in the tube, it must be addressed. Since this is a Cassegrain, with a 2X secondary, moving the primary only 1" forward or backward will move the final focus 2". The big tube needs only some detail work, and the final finish. As we are getting somewhat busy now with paying jobs, the work must be done as time permits, so I cannot pin down a precise completion date. I'm hoping to complete it this month, but as I said, I can't make that promise as of now. It will definitely be post-Olympics. When it's done, I'm not in charge of transportation, so exactly how and when it will be moved is up to Bruce. We'll need a flatbed trailer with tie-downs. Stay tuned. C.
Hi Chuck, Thanks for the update. If the tube ends up looking as good as the rest of the parts you did, I'll be wanting to wear white gloves just to touch it. Bruce recently joked (maybe he was not joking) that we'll have to put signs on the parts he and I painted saying they were not painted by you so as to keep you from being embarrassed... :-) Cheers! Patrick
Thanks to all who emailed suggestions. This morning everything worked perfectly, the account is back up, but I'll stick with this address for the list for now. Apparently some techie fixed it overnight. Today I had no problems deleting unwanted messages. BTW, the Olympic rings are visible across the valley from my back yard. Quite an inspiring sight! Chuck
FYI Sometimes I receive e-mails that are either too large or have problems that prevent them from loading properly. If I terminate the load before it is complete then all of the files try to load again. I go to http://www.mail2web.com enter my e-mail address and password and then can either read the mail or delete the mail that has the problem. I don't know if this works for mail from all ISP's or not but it is worth a try. I mailed this info to Chuck at his office. ...hope it works About mail2webT mail2webT is an Internet based email client that allows you to pick up your email from almost any POP3 or IMAP4 email server. Instead of offering another web based email service like Hotmail© or Yahoo Mail©, mail2web lets you use your present email account. You simply enter your email address and password to access your inbox. You can then read, reply and forward your messages. You can even delete large attachments without first downloading them! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chuck Hards" <chuckhards@yahoo.com> To: "Utah-Astro" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, February 07, 2002 11:17 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Yahoo problems again
