So what's the concensus.. should we disallow attachments to the list? I'm pretty sure it can be done. I get some spam myself anymore with those darn attachments that I just delete. Fortunately most of them are Windows, and my Linux computer just doesnt care about them anyway. LOL. I'll have a look at turn off attachments if peeps prefer. Cyn Kim Hyatt wrote:

Hey Cyn, I posted it -- it is nothing but a cropped version of a pancam photo that Opportunity took! Did I do something wrong? Sorry! -- Joe
Ooo You are in so much trouble!!! =) Just joking. I just had a request, and thought instead of just taking off the option, we'd put it up for vote. ;) Cyn Joe Bauman wrote:

Cynthia, Correct me if I'm wrong but currently it's set up so attachments over 40kb have to be approved by you (and/or Rich?) right? Would it be possible to change the size so that all attachments have to be approved before posting? There doesn't seem to be a ton of attachment traffic on the list but the group is growing. I've never had a problem with spam (or attachments for that matter) from the list. It would be nice to still have the option. Dave On Thursday, March 25, 2004, at 02:50 PM, Cynthia Blue wrote:

Hmm it appears that Mailman offers a pretty good filtering device. IF I can finger it out. LOL. We could filter all messages that include, say, images, so they reject. But since viruses come in various forms (exe, scr, zip etc) not sure that we could catch them all. Also, not sure if I know the technical term to use to filter them, though I can probably find it somewheres on the web (google is amazing). Looks like we can remove message attachments that meet certain criteria (positive logic) and we can remove message attachments that don't have matching content (negative logic). I always hated the negative logic stuff ;). Currently the positive is blank (but we could put, say, images in there), and the negative contains this: multipart/mixed multipart/alternative text/plain So, basically it denies everything that doesnt meet the above criteria. Oh, but I just turned this on, it was off before so everything was coming through. The only limit that was on there was nothing bigger than 40k was getting onto the list. So that wasn't an attachment limit, it was a mail size limit. And there were mails getting rejected that were over that size... lots of junk in there. Anyhoo... sorry if I've rambled on.. LOL. Want me to sent a test attachment to the list to see if that did the trick?
Patrick

I vote FOR including attachments. This list is a visually oriented list, and it helps to see images while you read about them. I agree with Kim, that there should be a mention, up front if possible, to let folks know that there is a legitiamte attachment. The best filter is looking at the senders name AND the content of the message. Brent --- Cynthia Blue <cynweb@cynthiablue.net> wrote:

Attachments send via list serves is a great way of spreading viruses. (Or is that virie?) I'm on more lists than I care to admit and only Utah Astronomy and one other still allow attachments. Patrick
I thought from the message I received re. size of file that it was OK to send a very small photo, like the cropped one from Opportunity. But I definitely see the wisdom of a rule against sending any and I agree with that. So count me as chastened and in favor of no further attachments. -- Joe
