Here is a 6 minute video detailing the flyby using sky safari, if anyone is interested. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EOYCzfvnrbQ Dan -- Sent from an iPad. There should be less mispelings, but more errors.
Up early on diaper duty (doody?) this morning, Dan? On Fri, Feb 15, 2013 at 6:54 AM, Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com>wrote:

As a matter of fact, yes. I'm not sure if Dylan wanted to get an early start searching for the asteroid, or get busy electing a new pope. But he certainly had something on his mind at 5 o'clock this morning. Does anyone know (just curious) if there are mounts made specifically for tracking satellites and other fast moving objects? Here are a few websites to get you started. Looks like you can do it with a Celestron GoTo with the right firmware installed. http://www.celestron.com/c3/support3/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewartic... http://legault.perso.sfr.fr/EM400.html http://www.dfmengineering.com/news/SatelliteTrackingTelescopes.pdf http://www.hobbyspace.com/SatWatching/ On Fri, Feb 15, 2013 at 7:26 AM, Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com>wrote:

And of course this unit, I'm sure Larry remembers these: http://bollerandchivens.com/?p=561 On Fri, Feb 15, 2013 at 7:26 AM, Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com>wrote:

Looks like something that Bruce Grim would have designed, except I don't see any standard plumbing fittings. (Bruce, I say that with admiration.) Did you all read the text? Can you imagine grinding the primary mirror: "a 31-inch f/1 spherical primary mirror"; that is a sagitta of 1.9375 inches!! If those mirrors were ground, that was a lot of glass to remove. Slumping would be the way to do it. But do ya think there was a little bit of coma with that setup? Interesting camera. It would have been very fun to work on a project like that. The Baker-Nunn cameras were Schmidts, IIRC, meaning that the film plane was curved, which would have taken care of much of the coma. The film size was pretty big too, I'm thinking 8 or 10 inches if memory serves. The entrance aperture was less than the full primary diameter. The primaries were full-thickness and done with government money, it's just a few more days standing around wetting the grinding machine, lol. I've even seen them come up for sale in the past. Chuck, not specifically, but I am sure I read about it in Popular Science. 73 On 2/15/2013 8:52 AM, Chuck Hards wrote:
