I just learned that the Salt Lake Tribune has eliminated their science section. I'm told their science writer was on vacation and received a call saying the "Science beat" has been eliminated from the paper. I find this a distressing development. No doubt they'll continue to cover the latest from Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan's next few stints in rehab and other equally important news. Fortunately science continues on NPR Hour One: Hurricanes / Voyager Spacecraft Anniversary http://www.sciencefriday.com/pages/2007/Aug/hour1_082407.html Hour Two: Chemistry News / Camping http://www.sciencefriday.com/pages/2007/Aug/hour2_082407.html
Joe Bauman, you've said that your retirement is close- is The DesNews planning to move someone else into the science "beat"? (You are too young to retire, Joe!) On 8/24/07, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

Hi Chuck, Nope, I will be 62 the day before I retire next April, definitely not too young in this high-stress job; I've been a professional journalist since 1968 and a high school or college journalist since I think 1963. So that's long enough. I don't know who will take over the science beat. But I believe the editors are pleased with science as a topic and I doubt that it will be abandoned. Science isn't a full-time beat, anyhow -- I cover the environment too, among other things. Thanks for asking. -- Joe On Aug 25, 2007, at 12:41 PM, Chuck Hards wrote:
