Wow, that's still a cool story! Supernova? Star of Bethlehem? Extra-terrestrial Visitor?) in a series of photos that included Sirius. The photos also included an equally-bright star on the other side of the frame, but changing position slightly with each new shot! I was excited and sent the photos to one of the magazines ("Astronomy" I think.) Someone wrote back and asked if I didn't perhaps have a UV filter on my camera? Yes. Then he pointed out that the extra star was the image of Sirius on the film plane of the camera reflecting back onto the UV filter and back again to the other side of the film plane. Dang! I had thought I would be famous and have a new star named after me. Raeburn G. I independantly "discovered" Nova Cygni 1975: http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/N/Nova_Cygni_1975.html I was 16 years old at the time, and was with several SLASers on Little Mountain a day after or the same day it rose to naked-eye visibility, and kept telling the adults that there was a 2nd magnitutde star in Cygnus that didn't belong there. I watched the sky nightly back then so I think I caught it as soon as it was more than a photographically-detectable-only object. Apparently none of them knew their constellations because I got nothing but laughter and jokes that night, from everyone in attendance. Some of you on this list were there, I believe, so you will remain nameless. For now... Talk about the one that got away...listen to your children, people!!
