Re: [Utah-astronomy] S and T in trouble
Another suggestion for those who want to give away their old magazines. IF the Clark has their teacher/student program this year (they had 2 classes last summer I believe) for a $100 students get the XT 6 and other goodies. You could look to donate back issues to the class. Chances are the funding is cut (if you don't know the program, students have to write an essay on why they should be selected to participate. Then they spend 5 days at Clark learning the sky, the constellations, deep sky objects, going to the U to view the observatory there and assembling the base to their XT 6 and how to use it). If anyone wanted to I have about 12 sixth grade students that are doing a weekly astronomy learning program with me on Wednesday's, after school from 3:30p.m. until 4:30p.m. I'm sure they would love anything anyone would want to give them, or share their experience on a subject they are learning about. We are currently learning about the moon, its features, physical characteristics, distance and diameter. Students are also learning how to use a dob in anticipation of a March 4th observing session (its not a school star party and weather permitting) of the moon and some other items they should be able to find and observe on their own or with a little help. I bought an XT6 just for this purpose and have of course a very old Tasco spotting scope that they use for the moon. I'm hoping by June (we're a year round school so this year school goes until July 2nd, at least for now) to hold a school star party night and have these students run a few scopes as well as having some more experienced people present as well. If the funding isn't cut then I am hoping to get a few of these going to the Clark experience and getting them hooked into the hobby and provide them with constructive alternatives of things to do. I actually hope to have some of them come back as they move up into junior high and perhaps high school to help out and observe with us. I figure even if all I do is plant a seed, perhaps down the road one of them will decide they want to get into the hobby, or study science more or make a career in a field of science. Perhaps its just a silly dream but it seems to be working for now. On 2009-02-14 18:04, Kim wrote:
Great idea, Daniel. I'll have to give mine to our local elementary school. Since I moved to Mt. Pleasant four years ago, I've offered time and again to do star parties for the school but they've never accepted my invitation. Maybe with S
