Just completed my first observational sketch of the year. I hope to do more in the (warmer) months to come. You can view the drawing on my blog here: http://www.kellyricks.blogspot.com/2013/05/waning-daylight-moon.html When I went back and compared my sketch with a nice photo, I noticed there were some features my eyes hadn't observed correctly...I guess it's easy to understand how there were canals on Mars for a while! Still, it's a fun exercise...and perhaps a good way to improve observing skills. ~Kelly
Looks better than my photos of Moon, that’s for sure. Dave On May 5, 2013, at 1:56 PM, Kelly Ricks <kellyalenericks@gmail.com> wrote:

Wonderful work, Kelly, it captures the waning, morning moon perfectly. Almost vaporous, ethereal. Be glad you're not using block pastels (ah, memories). Hint: Never snack when using pastels. Think of multi-colored Cheetos. And that reminds me of a student my painting instructor once told me about. His name was Dennis, but everyone called him "Densis" behind his back. Seems he had a taste for Alizarin crimson. See if you can find a building or tree that will block the sun. It's an old observer's trick when viewing Venus, Mercury, comets, or the moon in daylight. Might keep the pencils from sweating for a while longer. Keep 'em coming!
Nice sketch Kelly. The blue paper was a perfect canvas for the daytime moon. I love it.
