Lakeside sounds good to me -- what's the weather like? I wouldn't go for the marathon but just for the first new-moon outing of the season. SLAS is holding a Messier Marathon at SPOC this Friday and Saturday. It's not being published as a public event since it's a New Moon weekend. Messier Marathons are typically frantic activity after sunset and again nearing sunrise, with a lot of waiting for objects to rise in-between. So have a secondary list handy. Dress warm!
OAS is holding a Messier Marathon at Curlew Campground Friday and Saturday nights. The Curlew Campground is 6 miles north of Snowville. It is a nice dark location. Any astronomer is welcome to come. Not all of us will be doing the marathon. Let us know if you are coming so we can watch for you. I'm stuck working all weekend, so I can't get out to either SPOC or OAS, but I would if I could. I'm gonna play it by ear. Lastnight's snow isn't very encouraging, so I may just sit inside and bitch about how cold it is :) On Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 8:29 AM, Dunn, David <David.Dunn@supervalu.com>wrote:

SLAS is holding a Messier Marathon at SPOC this Friday and Saturday. It's not being published as a public event since it's a New Moon weekend.
Messier Marathons are typically frantic activity after sunset and again nearing sunrise, with a lot of waiting for objects to rise in-between. So have a secondary list handy.

The Clear Sky Clock for "Lakeside" looks pretty good for tonight and tomorrow night. Not perfect, but pretty good. We won't know about Thursday nights forecast for a while yet. Steve

I'm wondering if anyone has seen Sirius B. I went out a few days ago with my scope and all I could ever see was a giant big blue 4th of July Sparkler! Is there really a Sirius B? Has anyone ever seen it? Spencer Ball
Spencer, I've observed Sirius B before but not since the late 80's/early 90's. The chart at: http://www.dibonsmith.com/cma_a.gif will give you position angle and seperation details. The seperation is growing and is already greater than when I was observing the companion. What scope setup are you using? Good luck, Dave Bennett On Mar 20, 2012, at 01:13 PM, Spencer Ball <spencer@spencerball.com> wrote: I'm wondering if anyone has seen Sirius B. Dave, I have a Celestron 14" SCT. I have tried to place Sirius just outside of the upper left field of view (upper right before the star diagonal changes it) so I could see Sirius B without so much glare. But it doesn't work. It seems that I just must be picking all the wrong fuzzy days! I'll try again. I see it has moved farther north than I had thought. This is one of those instances where diffraction spikes may actually be helpful. Spencer, if you can fashion a thin cardboard strip that you can place over your secondary/corrector plate, it will cause two diffraction spikes 180-degrees apart. The spikes will draw some of the glare off of Sirius A and if you rotate so Sirius B is 90-degrees to the spikes, it may help. 1/4" wide is enough. If the upper atmosphere is at all in motion, however, it may be a lost cause. You need pretty steady seeing to see it. You may want to try as early as possible, as soon as Sirius is visible, even before dark. On Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 2:47 PM, Spencer Ball <spencer@spencerball.com>wrote:

In the 'Cloudy Night' double star chatroom claims have been made for the "pup" by a number of observers with telescopes as small as 80mm. Most of these observations are claimed by refractor users. Remembering how difficult it was in the 9" refractor, I am somewhat sceptical of the claims in an 80mm. I have not attempted it this season. I will try Friday night with a 160mm, weather permitting. The suggestion of a device to produce diffraction spikes away from the pup is a good solution and has worked for me. My preference is a square mask over the aperture. You might also want to use a smaller aperture. Sig On Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 3:25 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Sad but true, and this weekend will fall into that category. On the other hand, some of the best, clearest, most transparent skies I have ever seen around here are in springtime, one or two days after a storm front blows through. If you time it right, spring can offer the best seeing. But probably not this weekend. The good news is that all you need to do in a Messier Marathon is simply ID a lot of old familiar targets, even if the view is sub-par. I would be interested in going to SPOC except it appears the GRIM is not in working order.

I'm planning on observing tomorrow night at the Pit-N-Pole. Lakeside, I'm afraid, would be a quagmire with the recent precipitation we've had. I know Jay will also be at the Pit tomorrow. Also, my son has planned a star party for several of his college friends. This will take place this Friday at the Pit. If anyone is willing to help out, we could use a few more telescopes and operators. I know there are a couple of folks who are also going to use this time/place to do the marathon. There will be a place dedicated for marathoners that will be separate from the party goers. But anyone is welcome to join us for either the star party or the marathon at the Pit on Friday PM. Excellent, we'll look for you out there. Can you tell I am being hopeful about the weather? I plan on being there later as I have a commitment I need to attend to until 8:00 pm or so. Hopefully I'll be at the Pit by 9:00. Jay will likely be there before dusk.
Keep looking up!

Anyone thinking about going for a marathon this week? I'm giving some thought to Wednesday, weather permitting.

I'm being hopeful about the weather too, but the cloud cover here in SLC doesn't look too promising. On Wed, Mar 21, 2012 at 11:59 AM, Hutchings, Mat (H USA) < mat.hutchings@siemens.com> wrote:

Well, the forecast for Bryce Canyon through the weekend is for clear skies, temps in the high 50's to low 60's during the day and high 30's at night. So, Chrismo, if "down that way" means a little further south than you had in mind, Bryce looks like a good shot. I plan to spend Friday evening hours with some of my springtime friends in the night sky - from 8,000 feet with (hopefully) crystal clear air, perfect seeing, and unmatched darkness. And 15 minutes from my home. :-) May the observing gods smile upon us all this weekend. Ah, if only it were 15 minutes from MY home... I didn't get out lastnight, clouds here in SLC made me doubtful of conditions elsewhere. I may try to get out on Sunday night tho, probably Pit N Pole, but I might venture down to Bryce, especially if I can find someone to go with. Anyone interested?
