amateur astronomy, zen, & power outages
If anybody is checking their email on a cell phone or laptop, huddled in the cold & dark, just say the word and we'll get you some relief somehow. We lost power Friday morning at 9, didn't get it back until Saturday night at 7, 34 hours. House internal temp was about 48 degrees by then. Isn't it amazing how your spirits can soar just from the sight of a lightbulb lighting up? BTW, truss poles don't burn, and the shroud makes a lot of stinky smoke...same with laminated atlases. Only use the plain paper ones. ;) C. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Photos - easier uploading and sharing. http://photos.yahoo.com/
Sorry for the late reply Chuck, Saturday was our day for power fizzle. It went off at 04:30 and came back on at 21:30 that night. Yes the temp was getting low. I was shopping for a better heat source than my fireplace and found a thingy called DynaGlow at Walley World for about 80 bucks. It was great. It takes those small green propane (?) bottles and puts out great heat. I put one in the far reaches of the house and it would cook you out of the room. I'm going to get me several for the next Pacificorp unscheduled emergency drill. We have at least one every other month here. Oh and I did drag out my 240 lbs of AGM solar batteries and hooked up a few DC lights and a laptop to play DVD's for the grandkids. It's an adventure for the first six hours, after that it gets to be a pain and downright scary in the winter. Hope your doing OK now... Hi Gary: I've already worked a generator and wood stove into our '04 budget...never again! C. BTW, the new carbon-fiber tube Celestrons cannot be used for deep-frying turkeys. Only use the older models with aluminum tubes. ;) --- Gary Liptrot <n7zi@comcast.net> wrote:

Can't hurt. I bought a generator several years ago and we've not had a serious power outage since. 'Course, I also got the C-14 back together several days ago and have not had clear skies since. Go figure... Patrick Chuck Hards wrote:

I hear ya C.H.. I installed a free standing wood stove in my old Condo. It was great, I would build two fires a day and put a small lump of coal on top. You had to open windows it was so hot in there. Today the coal idea may not be too good considering the inversions etc but it sure worked good back then. Generators, hummmm. We should have asked Santa for a 500 gal fixed propane tank and a 10KW self start generator in a sound proof shed with auto-sensing cut-over panel. Well, I guess we may have to settle for a 5KW and an extension cord to just run the heater and one wall circuit eh? Or just wall paper the house with those little hand warmers, then when the power goes out you can just bang on a bunch of them with a hammer to mix the chemicals and warm the house. That would work for 4 or 5 storms... I have a 8000 watt natural gas backup generator with a transfer switch so it comes on automatically 30 seconds after the power goes off. It is also relatively quiet, 70 decibels. That's the ticket Don. My power is off so much that it may pay to do something like that. I have been playing with solar power and batteries which are great for my ham radios, a DVD on a laptop and a few lights but for true safety in an emergency there's nothing like a generator. Don, Gary, anyone with practical generator experience; is interference a problem these days, or are most modern generators in the 5kw-10kw class pretty clean? Any after-market RFI filtration needed? I heard recently that you want to get a generator with an inverter in it. The last 3 or 4 years the generators with inverters have become available and are as clean as power from the power company. Gary T., I have mostly solar battery/inverter experience at home but in the field I have used some generators that were small with no frills and some that were rather nice. All had A.C. plugs that we just ran extension cords to. We usually sandbag the generator location for the noise. I have run a bunch of laptops, P.C. desktops, radios, meters and even Air Conditioning units from them with no problems. If there are any RFI problems all of this sensitive gear would certainly show it. We would've heard it on the radios for sure. I have heard of certain items that don't like the wave-form off of an inverter. I have a small T.V. that won't run on my solar batteries and 750W inverter. For sensitive items (read expensive) I just use a surge protector. Hope some of this rambling helps or at least brings up other questions... The generator I got was designed to provide a sufficiently clean output to allow the use of computers. Many are not designed to do this, particularly the cheaper Coleman gasoline types. Most of the newer natural gas backup generators are designed to filter out spikes and they are used by banks, hospitals etc. so they have to be quite clean. I don't know what they cost now, but my 8000 watt Generac was $3500 during the Y2K scare plus an additional $2000 for the transfer switch which must be installed by a licensed electrician. These prices included installation. I also had to run a natural gas line through my house since the power meter was on the opposite side of the house from the gas meter. The generator is rated for 100 hours of continuous service before you need to rest it for a few hours.
