Nothing wrong with that. Considering Americans, and the rest of the free world for that matter, rely heavily on satellite technology, provided mainly by us, for it's day to day operations, any threat by a hostile government to disrupt that service, or, the life style in which WE have all come to expect, could bring a world of hurt to our economy and our way of life. It is THE role of our government to defend and protect our interests, and guarantee our security. And to that end, they should do whatever is necessary to get the job done. My question about space weapons (or any weapons for that matter) to protect satellites is, how do you make a weapon that would defend a satellite from millions of BBs put into an orbit going the opposite direction and on a collision course with the target satellite? Joe Bauman wrote:

My humorous, tongue-in-cheek speculative "question" was not serious, no apology necessary. Don't worry about anything you may think you implied about me. I certainly don't. No harm done. But I'm glad you admit that you know who Shumway is. Someone told me that you taped all the episodes. --- diveboss@xmission.com wrote:

He's the lone survivor of the great Melmackian race. As an orbit guard, he witnessed the destruction of his planet. He lived out his days on earth, avoiding capture by government agents, having been taken-in by a kind-hearted family. I've only seen one episode, under protest. Guy can tell you all the details. He has the trading cards and action figures, or so I've been lead to believe. If not, I apologize. --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

I found this part interesting: "John Mohanco, deputy director of the office of multilateral, nuclear and security affairs, said the United States faced a threat of attacks from the earth or from other countries' spacecraft. He did not name any potential attackers." 'Faced a threat'? That sounds like we think there's a potential for problems now. Anyway, I wonder who the 'potential attackers' are? I don't recall any space-capable countries that are openly hostile to us. Are we worried about the Russians? Chinese? Can terrorists get their hands on space-capable weapons? --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:

It isn't the "openly hostile" countries that would worry me, it would be the ones who, on the surface, pretend to be friendly while plotting your demise behind your back. And yes, I wouldn't put nothing past the Chinese government at this stage of the game. Think about it, the quickest way to bring down a super power would be to first throw them into chaos by manipulating the markets, and then while their attention is turned to the ensuing civil disturbance, knock out a few key satellites with lasers, to disable their means to communicate and navigate. I believe it was reported years back, that a couple of our satellites may have been targeted by a laser source. I know our high flying surveillance aircraft have been targeted with some pilots becoming blinded by a source. So who knows what exists, and by whom. With a growing capability of more and more nations to put things into orbit, and given the real potential for some scum bag group to purchase the services of a not so friendly country, we shouldn't be dragging our feet developing and deploying something that can at least defend itself or us. Ruin their economy by killing their own best customer, and immediately galvanize the rest of the free world against them? Gotta wonder about that. Also, I don't think the military surveilance folks will be distracted too much if stockbrokers start jumping out of windows. I'm not saying it's out of the realm of possibility, but what evidence is there besides suspicion? --- diveboss@xmission.com wrote:
