September is usually the best month for deep sky observing in Utah. This year the Labor Day holiday came early and has an unfavorable moon as well as the last gasp of the monsoon season. Water content is still close to an inch in the atmosphere. A trough is on its' way for Tuesday or Wednesday night but the models don't agree on which night. After that things should improve dramatically, with clear skies, highs in the low 80's and lows in the high 50's. For the impatient or those with nonstandard work schedules, Wednesday night might be the first good night if the trough is gone by then. Moonrise will be after 1:30 am the following morning so half the night is dark. By the weekend things should be looking good for the Capital Reefers who plan to go, but if you can't do that, anywhere at least 30 miles from the city should give you a dark, clear, and comfortable session. The next weekend after that has a three day old moon and is too far away to predict the weather. This is the time to do it. Get out there or you may spend the winter wishing you had.
