The day before Cosmos aired, I posted on my FB page, a rare event in and of itself, a reminder that Cosmos begins and everyone young and old should watch it. The day after Cosmos aired I spoke to some 40- something relatives about whether they had seen it. He has a Ph.D. T hey are very good members of the LDS faith ( mentioned , but the outcome would have been the same if they were Catholic, Protestant or Southern Baptist - it is what it is). They said, with great pride, when Cosmos started, they turned it off, because they don't believed in the b ig b ang t heory. While they also do not believe in the 6,000 year old earth theory, they adamently denied the b ig b ang theory. Now that's a bummer! An immediate apology to many on the board because my rejoinder was not "who do you think pushed the button." - or pulled the trigger :) As public outreach as Cosm may be, it's not reaching a deaf audience. This post is not intended to start a discussion, or whatever, it's just "it is what it is."
Whenever I hear the ‘I don’t believe in the Big Bang’ nonsense (as if I care what they believe) from some Joe-blow (sorry, Joe) I respond with a paraphrased version of J. B. S. Haldane’s famous retort: “Well, your god must be inordinately fond of beetles and helium-4.” That they never get it proves the point. Dave On Mar 15, 2014, at 13:41, jcarman6@q.com wrote:

Of course, there's the repeated inflation-deflation theory, which isn't exactly the same as the big bang, but is even more exasperating to try and understand. My grandfather grew up in the 20's and he was deeply suspicious of and didn't believe in alternating current. It seems that he admired Thomas Edison because he was an American and disliked Tesla because he was a Serb. During the 70"s once this bubbled up when he learned I was studying Physics. He wanted me to explain how the electrons coming out of the wall socket could be moving back and forth. It still bothered him even though he had been proven wrong for the previous 50 years. I would guess that, while we are not the target audience of "Cosmos", neither are the older people to set in their ways to accept a new idea. I think the ideal audience is the people who are now the age that we were when we saw the first episodes of the original series. By the way Fox13 is now showing a rerun of the Sunday episode as I sit here typing. DT
