OK, I saw NASA’s ad for the Hubble commemorative coins, but they don’t seem to be approved by the US Mint. In other words, they are not legal tender. I think the ad is misleading and should designate the “coins” as “commemorative medals.” Am I wrong? Kim Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. Checked by AVG Free Edition. According to the wikipedia article that Dave cited, the dies are not too expensive and the coins can also be cheap. Maybe we should consider a SLAS challenge coin. We can rap it on an unknown amateur's scope. If that person has no coin - well, we'll have to come up with something, a Messier challenge maybe. And of course we would have to agree to rap gently. While you may be kidding about making a SLAS coin, the Ogden club did have OAS coins minted recently. Looked pretty good too. I think they sold them as a fund raiser. patrick
I recall the Ogden astro folks came up with an attractive medal or coin whatever it is when Stardust reentered in 2006. -- Joe On Feb 20, 2008, at 3:46 PM, Kim wrote:

My bad - I misread. The ad actually says, "NASA Approved. The only NASA approved Hubble-Planet coin collection in U.S. History." So, I must ask, who cares? It still appears to be a waste of money.
