Hi Nancy, Thanks for posting this. One more reason I'd like to make the trip. :) But seriously, when one thinks about how wasteful, inefficient and oft times cruel the production of animal protein is it only makes sense to have plant based diets on such missions. I just wish I'd checked my email sooner as I just did my first interview on XM Satellite radio and we talked about Mars exploration so your story would have fit in nicely. Carniculture! Or even jerky! Don't get me wrong, veggies are a part of any balanced diet. So, if the Mars mission turns into "Donner Party 2" when the hydroponics station breaks-down, will you be alive when the return ship gets back to earth? ;-) Look up "long pig" on Wikipedia. The classical sea mariners had more to contend with than scurvy.
